sticking clutch???

Postby sillygrrrl » Thu Sep 06, 2007 3:39 pm

so, i'm @ a light waiting for the light to turn green. light turns green. i press in the clutch, shift into first, lift my foot up .. but the clutch doesn't come back up w. the foot. WTH???? so i shift into neutral to see if i can shift into 2nd so i can @ least pull over, but now i can't shift into ANY gear! the last thing i need is all of MoCo, MD mad at the stupid little asian girl who can't move her car outta the middle of a busy road. first i try 2nd gear - no go, so i try to shift back into 1st. even to get it into 1st was kind of a struggle. i finally manage to pull into a neighborhood & try pressing on the clutch again to see if i can get it to come back up, no luck. by this time the clutch is sticking to the floor & not coming up at ALL. i had to freakin pull the clutch up by hand!! funny thing is, after i physically pulled the clutch up, it started to work ok. the whole way home the car sounded like the clutch may not be disengaging all the way, but then again that could be me just being paranoid.

from what i'm hearding/reading - it could be either the master cylinder or the hyraulics(??). how can i tell whether it's one or the other? or both??

i did a search but didn't really find anything that could help me.

mannnn any help is appreciated guyss!!!! =(

hmm..i had that same problem with my old cavalier. It was my slave cylinder. I haven't really dug around the engine bay on the lara much, so i can't remember is there's a separate reservoir for fluid (brake fluid) or if it shares with the brakes system. Check to see if you're low. How many miles do you have on it? My cav had a slow leak starting around 80k (first sign of the slave cylinder dying) and eventually it took a sh*t. Cost me about 500 to replace (parts and labor), complete clutch kit

in my friends maxima, the fluid reservoir is over in the upper right side, up behind to the right of the master cylinder. hope that helps.

Yea this happened today with the spec stage 2 installed already i dont think that my clutch being aftermarket has any thing to do with the problem but i more or less think that it is a stock car part problem and not a aftermarket clutch (i hope) because i replaced my clutch because i burned through the stock one...

I think its a common manual transmission problem because i have a friend who has had this problem with his dad's SR5 Tundra (yes they do come manual) and his SR20 swapped 240SX so its not that the Solara is a bad Manual car its all manual cars have a chance of getting this problem...

What's everyone's mileage at the point their slave cylinder is going out? I had my clutch and flywheel replaced at around 80,000 miles when it went out, but the slave cylinder is still going. I'd like to maybe change this out before it goes bad just to save another tow truck fee. I'm at 108,xxx miles now...

has anybody ever tried an aftermarket slave cylinder?

after I did my swap (I went with a slave from NAPA) my clutch occasionally does this and it's really annoying. Sometimes it just kind of pops back up slowly as well.

I will be picking up an oem toyota one to slap on soon instead.

As well, does anybody know if an aftermarket Master Cylinder would also cause this? (I have on from napa as well)

hmmm....I don't know...plenty of after market parts just aren't as good most of the time...and for something as important as these two components, I wouldn't have gone aftermarket if they didn't cost so much at the canadian dealership

and I also find it strange that it was a symptom of a dying clutch....since a dead clutch wouldn't do that....

but regardless, my clutch and flywheel are both new, and I've been having this problem since the very beginning, which was about 5-6K kms ago
