Motion Sensor Installation

Postby Gadgetjq » Sun Aug 19, 2007 10:06 am

Here's a fix convertible owners might want to consider installing. It's a simple way to keep strangers paws off your 'stuff' when you park, top down.

All it takes is a little microwave motion sensor attached to your OEM alarm. The install can probably be done in less than an hour.

Interested? Go to this page: www.gadgetjq.com/solara and click on the "Tips" button. Scroll down to the last item on the page.

BTW clicks on the advertising links on my pages help support server and other costs of maintaining a website and are appreciated.

This is part of the alarm system to detect if people put their hands inside your car. It's designed to be installed in the center of the car.

As Sman posted this mod senses movement around the 'interior' of the car when the alarm is set. It isn't a backup sensor (though that sounds like it could be a future project).

Thanks for the clicks!

I might use this in my coupe....I leave my windows down a lot and my sunroof open.

sweetness.

question: why are you attaching this to a light switch in the first place?

"The clip was attached to the door switch trigger wire and it worked just fine until.... I climbed into the car the morning after doing a temporary hookup and noticed my courtesy light was coming on and going off on its own. The reason? The motion sensor was detecting my presence and grounding the door switch. If the alarm had been turned on that would have set off the horn but with the alarm off it was just pulsing the interior lights. The solution was to connect to the 'trunk' light switch. That bulb is probably back there flashing but unless you're transporting live humans in your trunk it's doubtful anyone will care."

which clip?

When you open your doors or trunk/hood the light switches provide a path to ground. If the alarm is armed that ground path sets it off.

The motion sensor trigger wire also creates a path to ground. Since it's connected to one of the lighting switches the alarm thinks a door has been opened so the alarm is triggered.

I checked the site and they have a page on car paint. I have a gen. 1 and I think my car has the same paint job as the one in the link. Can anyone tell me if it's Silverstream Opalescent like it says in the link? By the way, great link, i want to paint my calipers too.

You'll find a paint code number someplace on your car, usually on a plate under the hood. It's three numbers. Once you have that check the code for your color here: http://uktoyotaestimasite.tripod.com/co ... _codes.htm
or on one of several other websites that can give you the color 'name' as long as you have the code.

Don't trust colors you see on your computer screen. They tend to change (sometimes a lot) from the original to camera to website to the settings on your machine.

Sure, use your hood switch. The wiring schematic (gen2) indicates that wire is black but you'd for sure want to trace and check that to be sure.

The problem is I can't find anywhere on the schematic that specifically shows that wire goes to the body ECU inside the car like the door and trunk switches. There's a picture in the factory service manual indicating the hood switch is connected to pin 9 or pin 10 of the ECU but I didn't trust that enough to start willy nilly grounding wires (ECU's are expensive) The hood switch 'might' be connected someplace closer to the horn relay under the hood which is what it 'looks' like on the schematic.
