Buying a Solara..

Buying a Solara..

Postby DiVo » Thu Aug 16, 2007 1:15 am

I searched, and went through FAQ but never saw anything on this.
Is there anything to look out for when buying a used Solara?
I found a nice gen 1 5 speed.. he says it has the trd package ? (supercharger, body kit, strut bar etc) did they come with this as a stock option? He also said it has an upgraded pully so I'm going to make sure it isn't over 5.5psi.
When do timing belts need to be replaced on these cars?
It has 78000 miles is there anything major I should make sure has been done by this time?
This is my first post so I guess ill introduce myself.. im Dillon from alaska and I'm going move down to Reno for college soon so I need a reliable nice car and I think solaras are pretty sick.

Anyway thanks for any replys/help in advance guys

you can use search function, try those key words:

knock sensor
timing belt
water pump
spark plugs
boost

usually you can only buy TRD stuffs from dealer btw

Welcome :D

The TRD package from the dealer didn't come with the supercharger and strut bar. That was bought after, also the strut bar used to come with the superchargers. I've never heard of Toyota/TRD releasing an edition with power enhancements (like a supercharger), it's usually cosmetic and handling. Even though, a real Solara with the TRD package had a little tweaking and squeezed out a few more horsepower.

Looks like a good find to me, but some researching is never out of line!

Thanks for the replys guys.
I'll ask him what mannagment system he has and if he has upgraded the spark pllugs and changed the knock sensors.. i had to do that on my truck it was a bitch.
I am guessing I should get a compression test on it to make sure the higher psi s/c didn't cause any damage..

Ok just called the guy. He claims he bought it off his friend who had all the mods installed by the dealer i think it may have been a factory TRD car. Anyway he was like its running 9.5 psi and stock they were 7 psi and he wouldn't believe me that stock they are at 4psi.. is there any way to test what PSI its running? It seems to be a fine car and at 8.5k$ it is a deal, but i think its a reconstruct..
If the s/c has been on there since the factory should I expect a rebuild by 100k? I am guessing knocksensors etc has been changed since the s/c has been on there a while and its in good running condition.

9.5psi is too high....

i believe you will need fuel system modification and management system set up to support the boost. and of course, a really good tuning

Problem is this guy is telling me this is all from the factory.. i asked if it had bigger injectors and a managment system to support the high psi and he said uhh yeah whatever the factory put on there bigger injectors yeah, and i was like so it has S-afc and he said no.. he seems like a newb that doesn't know what hes talking about thats why i question the 9.5 psi.. maybe he has a boost controller or something

the stock Boost is at 4psi.

Then from there u can get a 5.5psi, and 6psi which is pushing it on stock internals.

That is complete bullshit that he's telling u that the stock PSI is 7psi. And if the car is indeed getting 9psi, id get the motor checked to see what he fuckt up, cause 9psi on a stock engine usually doesnt go very well. Get a compression test on ALL cylinders Check the car if it has a weird IDLE, and so on.

You're best bet is to test drive it. He should have the TRD boost gauge, ask him, you'll be able to see what boost he's really at.

a lot of people get confused. Many people believe that "from the factory" and "from the dealer" are the same thing.

That guy is just confused. It was dealer installed.....possibly by the dealer BEFORE the car was sold for the first time.

This could be a GREAT deal. I would jump on it.
