Warming up your car.

Warming up your car.

Do you guys warm up your car before to work or anything? Is there a need to? Like on cold days, i let it warm up for about 3-5 minutes. I'm just wondering if there is any need to.

I have a 2004 SLE Solara 60k miles.

its a waste to warm up the car for more than a couple minutes. The car warms up faster running, plus its actually better on the motor, to drive it instead of just letting sit and idle.

you are wasting gas by warming up for a couple of min, these modern cars don't need warming up.

i agree, your not getting ready to run a race, so dont worry about it.

the car performs better at higher temps, but its doesnt damage it to drive it at lower temps.

waste of gas..

I dont agree... In my opinion you should absolutely warm up you car (5 min max) in cold days. Just to get all the fluids to run smoothely...

For a fact, I know you should warm it up for 30 sec anyday (hot or cold) to allow the oil to flow inside the engine well. says so inthe manual

Tottally agree...warmp-up 30 second every day...winter is 2 minutes or the time it takes to take off the snow.

In the modern sense, warming up just means driving gently around the neighborhood, since you'd only warm up the engine idling it and not other moving parts that may need to be warmed up as well (e.g. steering, transmission)... Usually the only "idling warm up" I do is start the engine, turn on the radio, fasten my seat belt and go... Less than 10 seconds ;) .

warm up is meant different by different people. If you asking if you sit and drive..i would never do that.

I however, start the car, keep my laptop bag in teh trunk, remove my wallet and place it in the arm rest, set my AM-Radio station, then drive way (whivh is like 60 seconds from the time i started)...that is what i call warm up

Here in SoCal the engine is always warm year-round! ;) It only takes a few seconds to get oil dispersed through the engine and crankcase. The hardest thing to do to an engine is cold-cranking - more metal-to-metal during the first few cranks.

Obviously in colder weather there may be a diff but where temps never go below 40º get in start and go. ;)

I don't warm up my car as in temperature, but I do "Warm-UP" my car in a way.

After starting it, I wait a few seconds before putting into gear. I can hear the sound of the engine change from first start up to 10 seconds or so after. When it's real cold, I wait a little longer. I've never timed it, I just wait until I feel it was long enough.

Climate has much to do with it. I'm in Texas, so it's only cold for about a month.

Winter and summer startup is totally different IMHO. Summer it gets the standard 15 seconds then go time. Run conservative till the temp is normal then all is fair. Winter takes some care. In a hurry 15-30sec is ok as the oil is protecting the system. However the metals haven't gotten to temperature and I drive conservative, if possible, till they do.

I REALLY want to get a remote starter installed before winter. I know a 5min warm up wastes "some" gas, but shouldn't hurt the engine IMHO. Just looking for personal comfort on those really cold days and it's easier to scrape ice LOL

During really cold days when I start the Solara I just driver really slow til it warms up. I live in FL so this stuff never is an issue to me.

Back when my family used to own a 95 Civic LX, they would let their car sit for a minute or two before driving during the cold days in New York.
