SE Sport v SLE? 4cyl v V6?

Postby icelove82 » Tue Aug 07, 2007 11:48 am

4cylinder???? No way...
Even though I drive V6 model (Gen 1), I still want more power!!!
Don't drive too much Solara in city, Solara's fuel economy is horrible in city driving.

I recommend V6 all the way~!
SLE V6 would be my choice if I were you.

your dealer lied to you.

Wouldn't surprise me at this point. I HATE the dealer I bought the car from... I will NEVER go back there... but that's a different story. LOL

flblue --- it would be a lot easier to get an SE Sport V6 and add the things you want later. You can find JBLs for sale on Ebay sometimes and getting aftermarket leather (or stock leather seats from a junk yard) is easy.
Good luck with your search

Yea I got about 23 mpg last time when I drove in mainly city, but most cars do worse in city than highway.

I get 29-30+ mpg with a lot of cruising and little stop and go.

I4 vs V6

Postby 47TH_Ronin » Wed Dec 19, 2007 9:52 am

I have an 05 SE Sport I4. Personally, I'd do with an I4, simply because there is a lot more room for upgrades then there is for the V6 model. Besides, with the extra 3+ grand you will pay for the v6, you could purchase a turbo and intercooler and be right at around 290whp...depending on your boost and other variables..but it is possible Ive done it lol.

4 vs. 6 cylinders

Postby ff4you » Mon Dec 31, 2007 9:07 am

Dear flblue, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with a good number of the postings on this issue. Hopefully, my car doesn't blow up or something when I start it next time! :P
I drive an '07 4-speed automatic with a 4-cylinder motor, and I'm completely satisfied with it. Of course, I'm not sure what type of driving you're in to(racing, cruising around, etc.).
In fact, probably one of the biggest selling points of my car was the gas mileage. In CR Magazine, that was one of the only negative things they could find about the Solara V-6. In their tests, the "overall" MPG was 21.
I'm getting 29.5 MPG consistently, and my driving is a normal combination of stop & go/freeway driving. And no, y'all "head bangers" out there; I don't race!
I did a cool experiment on the night that I took delivery of the car. I drove damn near everywhere in Houston using only surface streets to see what the "true" city mileage was. It took some time, trust me, but I finally got it, and it came out to be 23.5 MPG.
Then I jumped on the freeway to see what kind of results I'd get. It took a while, once again, but I finally got it to 33.5 MPG. Both of those numbers, believe it or not, were only 0.5 MPG lower than Toyota advertised; I was pleasantly surprised.
I'll have to continue this post at a later time, flblue, as I can feel the "V-6'rs" chompin' at the bit.
Talk to you later.

Take care,

James

The 2007 4 cylinder models comes with a 5-speed automatic.

4 vs. 6

My bad; you're absolutely right.

Thanks,

JP

Wow! No vicious remarks from the "hard-cores" out there?! Maybe they're waiting until after the new year to "bust my chops" about my opinions and experience with the 4. :splat:

I have an 06 V6, and I get anywhere from 22-25MPG in mostly city type driving, very little actual highway cruising.

It all depends on how I drive.

If I wanted fuel economy only, I wouldn't have bout a big heavy touring car!

To each their own - depends on how you drive and the experience you want to get out of it I guess. I feel that I'm finally getting the HP to match the heavy frame of the convert with my mods now and am getting a more balanced, pleasurable driving experience from it (save for the sh!tty tranny they put in these sleds!) - I just really can't imaging getting anywhere with a 4-banger and and this auto tranny. It would always feel like I'm pulling a big boat behind me. :o

As it is, with my heaviest foot in all city driving and doing as many burn-outs as possible, I still average about 20mpg city and 25 hwy. If I'm cruising on long trips its more like 28mpg avg. even staying around 80mph, in all grades.

gas mile

Postby 47TH_Ronin » Tue Jan 01, 2008 8:42 pm

i just read the post and yea, that is one thing i love about my solara. I have an 2005 Solara SE SPORT with a 5 speed manual. I do get on mine alittle and i still manage to get 450m out of a tank of gas. I am stationed in fort hood killeen tx, and travel to san antonio tx which is about 150miles apart. If i fill the car up, i barely touch 1\4 tank of gas. round trip im still above half a tank and thats with doing 80 to 90mph on I35. CITY i go about 2 to 2 and a half weeks per tank at around 400miles total...and killeen traffic is a pain in the ass. I can't say i race my solara...at 156hp and 162torque.....i can;t compare to the STI, EVO, GTO, Stangs, CORVETTS, CAMAROES and other various speedo cars that my fellow soldiers indebt themselves with upon returning from iraq, but i have taken her to over 130mph and i do still "try" to win a little stop light to stop light now and then....and i still get the same gas mileage. the wierd thing is....how toyota managed to get that same performance in the V6 models....i have a 17 or 18g tank with a 2.4 litter I4......so toyota musta done some tweakin on the v6.
