Fixing a few things

Fixing a few things

So my car has a couple of things broken on it, so far I've replaced the suspension at all 4 corners, new tires, and I changed a fuse which resulted in my Digi clock finally working.
When exploring the fuses, I noticed one named A/F HTR being missing from it's hole.. if anyone could tell me what it does, it'd be great.
Also, my power mirrors just sit there, can't get them to adjust, and my blower only works on max setting, anything below that, no air comes out.
Then there's the gauge cluster backlight that is dead on the tach side, if someone could link me to instructions on pulling that out, and what kinda bulb it uses, it'd be great.
The brakes are still garbage b/c my BMC is on its way out, but I don't have the money for that just yet, so I'll be changing it when I can.
I asked Toyota for a quote on all these things, and they wanted a lot of money... especially for the mirrors, they wanted like 100 bucks just to see what's wrong with them, not actually fix them. I'd rather not spend 100 bucks only to be told that they can't fix them, and I gave them money for no reason.

gauge light bulb is a peanut wedge bulb (174?), just unscrew the top 2 phillip head screws to take the bezel out, then 4 bolt/screws that anchor in the gauge cluster.

i would recommend changing your brakes as a priority.

The blower motor could be a relay that needs replacing. I had the same thing happen on my other car, and that was the problem.
I don't know where they are on a Solara.

I also agree with Mole. Get the brakes fixed asap!

LOL, the brakes are an obvious priority, but I found out that it was my BMC far too late. I originally thought they just needed a bleeding, and did tires and suspension first, and now I'm completely broke until my next paycheck. They're not too bad however, and I'm getting paid friday, so I intend to get them fixed that weekend.

Unless the suspension cracked and is affecting the structural integrity of the car, the tires are so worn out that the steel belting is showing, the brakes should have been your first immediate priority!

Since I'm speaking by experience when I had to help a friend drive her car to the dealership, it's NOT fun to drive a car with a failed BMC... Especially when I tested the situation for her, and a brake test proved itself impossible since while doing a 60-0 MPH test, the pedal was on the floor around 20MPH; I had to pump the brakes to bring it to a stop.

Then, I took local streets and had to engine brake (even more not fun since it was a 5spd and I had to double-clutch it into 1st)... So scrape together whatever money you have and get it done ASAP, before some dummy cuts into traffic and messes you up, especially if 1. The brakes are the most important part of your car, and 2. if you're leaking brake fluid too, chances are it'll develop air pockets, kill whatever hydraulic pressure is left and further ruin your braking performance.

With that being said, check your mirrors to see if there's any mechanical whirring when you push on the action button; if not, it could be the fuse/relay. If there is and it's not moving but could still be kept in an optimal position and manually adjusted in place, sounds like the motor. If it seems to go limp and not stay in place, it could be that the rods that connect to a set of gears that adjust the mirror angle have slipped out.

Ugh... The brake pedal felt mushy when I picked the car up, seeing as though it was sitting in a dealership and 285k on it, I assumed (as one logically would) that they needed a bleeding. The tires were damaged and unsafe to drive on, they were not worn, they had large bumps on them causing the car to vibrate at speed. The shocks were completely blown, causing the car to float all over the place, and again, was unsafe to drive in its current state. The brakes were an obvious priority as well, however bleeding brakes costs barely anything since I can just do it myself, so I didn't allocate funds to it. I realize you were probably trying to be helpful, but I am not some child that purchased his first car and is "souping it up", and having a BMC replaced is by no means cheap.
Thanks for the input on the mirrors however, I'll look into it.

Your fan setting issue is most likely the blower resistor. About a $50-60 part available from the DEALER ONLY.

Thanks!
Update - Mirrors work now! I guess messing around with the fuses fixed them.

:o Whoa... That's a lot of stuff wrong! Sorry; I just get kinda sensitive about brakes, especially with the aforementioned experience.

Yea, sorry for coming off like that, I've had the misfortune of dealing with clowns that ignore necessary work like brakes and suspension and go for boost right away, so I got a bit touchy when I thought I was being labeled as one.
As for the car... yea.. When you get a car for half of what it normally goes for, and like double the mileage than what is normal for that year, you should expect crap like this. I was just being silly and thinking I was getting "a deal", so I grabbed it.
Most other things on the car are solid however, and the BMC was the only thing that just popped up and suprised me. I think that after getting that fixed the car should be in very good shape mechanically (motor pulls really hard, gets great fuel economy, car chirps second so clutch has tons of meat left), so overall I wouldn't say I regret it.
I had an S13 240SX before this, and I can honestly say I like this car better. The Solara looks better, pulls harder, gets better fuel economy, it feels very plush and decadent inside, the factory JBL stereo kicks ass, I can proudly drive it to the office and I'm not being labeled a street racer anymore. That and chicks love it ;)
