Engine belts in the Gen2

Engine belts in the Gen2

Postby MCOjerry » Fri Jun 15, 2007 8:06 pm

I have been having a squealing sound coming from my engine after sitting for a long time. When I went in for service last weekend, I mentioned this to the service advisor. (On my previous visit to this last one, he said my serpentine (?) belt was loose, and they tightened it up. At that time, he said that this was the only belt in the Solara.)

On this last visit, when I mentioned the squealing, he said he'd order a new belt...but he made it sound like there was more than one belt this time.

How many belts are there in the Solara engine? I want to make sure I get this fixed ASAP (going in tomorrow), because I'm at 32K miles. I just want to be sure there isn't more than one belt that needs replacing...OR that there isn't something else that could be causing this squeaking.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks!

I have the same squealing sound from my engine bay after sitting over night sometimes. I really haven't had the time to take it into the dealer for a while...but do you think you can let me know what exactly the dealer does and how much it costs when you get it done? I'd greatly appreciate it. :D

OK, went to dealership today. I had a 10:30 APPOINTMENT! When I got there, I asked them to also look at my winshield washer nozzles, since they were rather impotent lately.

AFTER THREEH HOURS OF WAITING, they finally tell me it's ready. I ask if they figured out what was wrong with the nozzles. Oh, I forgot you wanted us to check those. ARGH!

Anyway, I had to wait another half an hour while they replaced them...next time I'm going in saying, "I have an appointment, I epxect my car to be worked on right away!".

Obviously I won't be able to tell if everything is all fixed until the car has sat overnight a couple of times, but they said my drive betls were glazed, which was causing the squealing. They replaced two belts (not sure if that's all that are in the engine), which means that the guy was giving me a load of crap when he said there was only one belt in the car.

So...I'll be sure to post up if this solves the problem so you all can go in and get your belts replaced before your warranty is up (hopefully it's not up for you all yet).

Oh yeah, forgot to mention. After my dealer ordeal, I went to Chipotle for lunch and as I was standing in line I looked out the window to see a couple of guys out in the parking lot taking pictures of my car :D

See, even a stock Solara can get some looks!

Should be 3 belts if you have AC, but I haven't looked. (warranty just ended recently so I'm sure that'll change.)

For the squealers: A $3 can of belt dressing will get you right. But check the health of the belts while you're in there.

LOL, no...they were rather country looking, if you know what I mean...not rebel flag toting country, but country.

What exactly is belt dressing, just a lubricant? Dealer told me mine were gazed, which I can only assume means worn too smooth. I was lucky that it happened before the warranty was up.

FYI, my invoice shows the following part numbers for the belts:

90916-A2009 Belt, V-Ribbed
99366-21040 -83 Belt, V-Ribbed

Just in case that helps if you are doing yourself.

No - they're Little matching shirt, pants and shoes for the engine.

Seriously - you don't want to go that route... it's just basically spray glue that coats everything and makes a real dirt collector/mess! :o
