Good 6x9s and a 5/6 channel amp

Postby hari-bhari » Wed May 09, 2007 9:38 pm

im lookin to upgrade my rear speakers and install a 5 channel amp to replace my 4 channel that i can power all my spkrs plus a sub. i dont need top of the line, but my buddy can get me good deals on alpine amps through his company, so are these generally pretty good sound quality?

as for the 6x9s, i was looking at mb quartz cuz my friend has a set and they thump pretty hard, but what else could i go for? i just want some decent rear fill for probably <100. my fronts are really nice (DLS MS6), and i figure getting really nice rear speakers would be a waste cuz 1) nobody sits back there, and 2) theres nowehere to stick tweeters, so id have to go with coax. btw, anyone ever put holes into their side panels in the rear for tweets?

Alpines are right up there- but why do a 5 channel amp?

IMO-
1) 5ch/6ch amps are being pushed too hard which can cause it overheat and cut out. OR distortion (popping) at higher volumes.

2) Get some Infinity 6x9 3way (i wanna say kappas but not too sure) - those are bright as hell.

3) Hunt down those rattle spots and mat it up.

Take ur current power cable- use a fused block distributor to split the power cable to two. Sand down another metal part for ur ground and use the RCA OUTPUT from the primary amp to send signal to ur secondary amp.

When I used to have my Sebring I had a PPI 5 channel amp pushing Infinity Kappas and 2 JL audio 12 inches and I had no problem with a 5 channel amp.

I have this amp for sale.

New in the box, never been used.

I had plenty of customers rocking this amp like a champ and no complaints.

5/6 channel amps are usually just two amps in one chassis... There is nothing abnormal or wrong with them, and there are some excellent models available. The amp blaK has for sale is actually a decent amp, you may want to check it out... I'm not a huge fan of the JL "e" series, but it will definitely do the job. If you're willing to pay a bit more, DEFINITELY check out the JL 500/5... It's an AWESOME amp for 5 channels.

As for Alpine, they've made a few different 5 channel amps... some were GREAT, others not-so-hot... What model can your buddy get for you? If you can get an older Alpine V12 5 channel amp, GO FOR IT. If it's a V-Power, skip it and go for one of the JLs or other companies.

Unfortunately not many (quality) companies still make 5/6 channel amps (and when they do they're expensive)... If you're willing to go used, check out PPI as well, as they used to make a few excellent choices.

To be honest with you, I don't have much experience with newer Infinity amps... their older stuff was alright, but I don't know anyone who run with their new stuff (beside speakers).

The Diamond amps are generally good stuff. If you did wind up separating out your mids/highs from your lows, the Diamond would be a pretty good choice.
