Prognosis: Engine sludge. :(

Hey,

I bought my first Solara three months ago, a 2002 SLE V6 convertible (white/tan.) I love everything about her, but after a while I started to notice something odd. The car would lose two quarts of oil every 3000 miles so yesterday I went to the service department at my local dealership, Toyota of Melbourne in Melbourne, FL. I had originally gone there to get the ECU replaced (since I only had a valet key) so while I was at it, I decided to pay the money to have the car diagnosed. Something like $80. They called me up to the service booth after 3 hours of waiting and the guy asked me: "Do you have a service history for the car? I know you bought it three months ago." I didn't have anything like that and I immediately knew that I had sludge since I was reading up on it the night before.

I asked "I have sludge, don't I?" and he said "I'm afraid you do." so I asked to see it for myself. I followed him into the garage where they had exposed the crankshaft. Unfortunately, sludge was VERY visible all over the place.

Right now I'm waiting to hear from Paul (the service writer), who is, in turn, waiting to hear from the district manager to get back to him about approving an engine replacement or rebuild. One thing I am very nervous about is the fact that I have no documentation, and I'm hoping that the car having only been in my possession for only three months will help my case. Paul promised that he would stress that fact for me.

Here are pictures of my car, including the sludged engine.

What do you think my chances are of having Toyota foot the bill? I spent $15k on this car and I definitely cannot afford the $3-6k necessary to get this fixed. Thank you! :)

You owning the car for only 3 months makes your chances of getting the issue fixed very likely.

start using synthetic in the new engine after you've broken it in, synthetic will prevent oil sludge.

goodluck.

Thanks! I always use synthetic. Right when I got my Altima around 4 years ago, I immediately started using Mobil 1 Synthetic. What do you think of the idea of putting in a small amount of diesel fuel (half a quart) and letting it run for about half an hour to clean it up as much as possible? That does sound a bit dangerous and ill-advised, though.

I know... my Sidekick 3 camera sucks. Didn't have my real digital camera with me when I was at the dealer.

I wouldn't advise on the diesel fuel. Just use fuel injection cleaner and throttle body cleaner. How many miles do you have on your SLE V6?

Hi, you never really posted an intro...I posted on your dealer ran post, but anyway...hello to a fellow central floridian.

Sorry about your problem. I don't suppose Motor Car Concepts gave you any kind of warranty? Lots of used dealers are nowadays, so look at your paperwork. If Toyota doesn't come through, maybe you have another way.

Good luck.

Hey... Oh, I forgot. I've been really busy dealing with a lot of stuff. :)

The warranty was 3k/30day so it's long expired. Anyway, I'm done dealing with these SOBs, especially after I cussed the salesman out on the phone a couple of weeks ago. :D

I'll go post the intro tonight.

Suggestion

Postby JMSinMaryland » Tue Mar 27, 2007 7:59 pm

Get your $80 back, no reason to pay to have them diagnose a problem that Toyota has accepted responsibility for.

Actually, I did. I ended up paying for the valve cover gasket because I needed a new one.

Awesome! Thank you. You'll be the first I go to if the district manager declines my request.
