Solara a good idea?

Hi everybody,
I am looking at a used Solara and was just wondering if there were any typical problems with these cars. It's a 99 V6 w/5spd. 101k miles, $6500. Any comments or any other info I should know would be appreciated. My previous car was a B15 sentra with the sr20, I just want to know if the solara motor will be equally reliable. I know it IS a toyota though...so it should be...

^ well obviosuly with this being a solara/camry forum i'd assume most ppl would say a solara is quite the upgrade.
in my honest opinon. Go for it! :drinking:

Vinnie is right, 5speeds are hard to find..

yeah, I suppose you guys would like your cars, but are there any common problems with these cars? Like how all sentras have interior rattles, the water pumps on the sr20"s don't like high revs, the starter starts to go around 100k, etc. Info like that would be useful in my decision...thanks in advance for any replies.

There arent many problems with solaras. The only major problem is sludge but if the oil was changed on time you should not have a problem. So if its possible have the engine checked.

As long as their is no sludging, this motor is very reliable. Usually this motor gives way when the owner doesn't take care of it, but obviously that goes for any motor. Good luck!

I have 150k and the only real problem (besides some annoying, recurring emissions junk) has been sludge.

It would be REALLY REALLY good if the previous owner had a year of oil change receipts. That's all you need for free sludge repairs (if they happen) although it's only an 8 year warranty on the sludge...

Never had any problems with mine, haven't heard anything from anyone else either besides the sludge thing. See if they've done regular oil changes and if possible, look over the engine for that sludge buildup.

The car is in chicago. As for the sludge issue, that doesn't sound bad at all. I'll be running amsoil anyways so that should take care of that prob.

^^^ I'm gen 2, so I couldn't tell you on the sludge... but a "bump" to the Solaras and Toyotas in general... my car runs like the day I bought it... (MUCH better, actually...) at around 57k miles. Another "bump" on your decision to run Amsoil. Among the "best of the best".

Plus Two on the Amsoil decision... I have 142,000 on my ford truck, and have run amsoil since 75,000 and the motor is spotless inside. I am running Mobil 1 in the Solara right now, but will upgrade to Amsoil when the miles build up. No substitute for good synthetics!
