well, i got my new windshield today, it took an extra day because they could not get there hands on a solara windshield right away. it is xyg brand, which i have never heard of, but it looks identical to the original one. i got it done for $260 plus tax.

the only odd thing is that the little window that lets you see the vin # plate is not lined up right, so you can hardly see the vin plate at all. i hope that is not going to be a problem.

well i look for the blue strip at the top and the black dots around the rear view mirror etc. some of the windshields that claim they are oem do not have blue strip or black dots around the mirror, it happen to my father.

I picked up a rock chip in my windshield about a year ago. I lived with it because it was way down on the passenger side and didn't really bother me.

Then one day I went to the local lube shop and they said they'd fill in the chip for me to prevent it from spreading. I hem'd and haw'd a while and finally gave in - letting them make this seemingly simple repair.

The very next morning I went out to the Solara (after a year of having this chip btw) and it had web'd all the way across the windshield. WTF?!?

Time for a new windshield for me.

Yeah, there's a tiny chip just below my visor, but it hasn't spread even when I pressed it a few times, so thank God for that!

I got the repair kit myself at Pep Boyz and applied it to my GF's Camry - worked great and hasn't had any issues since.

I think it all depends on the chip - cracks on the other hand still show a bit after the repair. ;)

I wouldn't say the solaras have fragile windshields because yesterday I was driving down the highway and this giant slab of snow mixed with ice and water slammed against my windshield at im guesing around 60 mph, it mad a loud THWOKKKK sound, i pulled over and checked eveywhere, no cracks. Unless if it was mostly snow, but i highly doubt it judging from the sound it made.
seems to me the solara windshields aren't that bad.
maybe with rocks it's a different story.

if you do a lot of highway driving ur windshield is gonna get damaged. When u hit a rock going 70+ (which of course all the law abiding SGs would only be going this fast to pass  ) it doesnt matter what windsheild u have.

I think the concern (note the location of this thread) is on Gen2 windshields. I'm guessing by some of the posts above from Gen 1 / 1.5 owners, that there is no issue of fragile windshields in early models.
