Broken glass is an insurance issue, not covered under warranty.

I got hit with a rock in the same region as Phreakd and mine held up well with two pit marks from the rock and no crack. I think it will probably split when it gets really hot outside and my AC is on full blast inside.

If you guys are in very cold weather and your heater is on, it will make the glass more succeptible to splitting along the rows of the crystilline formation.

But yeah, the picture from Phreakd looks like a boulder hit it since the splitting happenned in all directions.

anyone that had their windshield repaired care to share how much it cost? I got in my car today and discovered a crack in mine. Have to go tomorrow to look into getting it fixed. Just wondering what anyone else paid so I know what to expect.

well today i had my windshield go. i was riding along a local 2 lane highway and out of nowhere i heard a loud bang noise and i had little bits of glass flying everywhere, and some how i got a cut on my hand with a piece of glass stuck in it, not sure how. the impact knocked my sirius tuner off the windshield too. i just got finished vacuuming up all the glass. i put some tape over it to prevent any leaks, but its getting replaced monday.

it looks worse on the inside.

When I walked out the door at about 10am, I noticed the windshield was cracked by the driver's A pillar with no evidence of any impact. I didn't mention this one earlier as I thought no one would believe me or just think I was a whiner. Thanks for letting me know that I'm not the only one. The Toyota dealership would probably say "oh, they all do that, it's normal".

A small meteor could have hit your car. It's happened to me once when I was younger. We were pulling out of the mall and all the sudden a little rock aparently fell from the sky and shattered the window all over my sister (passenger side). We went the whole car ride with a huge gash in the window and a sister cut by glass shards. Not fun.

Anyways, back on topic. Mine has a few small cracks in it and ab bunch of little dings. They all piss me off, it's like the previous owner (Hertz) took the thing off-roading and tail-gated a truck. The whole front end has been pebblized when we bought it, but not fixed for free as Hertz claimed. Oh well, $14k for an 06, I'm not complaining.

I've been behind many a gravel truck and I just guess I've been lucky. I never knew how lucky until after reading this thread.

Sorry, NOT POSSIBLE.

Why?

A meteor CANNOT hit the earth... or your CAR for that matter... by definition. A METEOR is CONSUMED when it BURNS UP while passing through the earth's atmosphere before it reaches the earth.

A METEORITE is the term for a meteoroid that reaches the earth as an object of remnant mass.

Perhaps a METEORITE hit your winshield? 8)

You never cease to amaze me.

Back on topic, a couple of years ago, I took my Solara for a road trip to Chicago... in January.
It was snowing pretty bad and I was following a green Volkwagen Bug. The VW kicked up a rock and hit the windshield about 3 inches from the pillar. It started out as a small crack, but due to the freezing cold and the heater whenever I was driving made the crack grow from top to bottom before I made it home from my trip.
This was, of course, unrepairable. I had to replace it. Insurance company wouldn't help me either. I found an auto glass place that comes to your car to do the replacement. They originally had an all black gasket, but OEM is a chrome gasket. I asked for the chrome one. They had to go out to get it, but when installed, it looks good.
That was three years ago. today, the cheap gasket they used has cracked chrome all the way around the windshield. From a distance, you can't tell, but if you get close up, it looks terrible.
The total cost of windshield and labor was $290.

Just thought I'd share.

Your insurance wouldn't help you? That's odd. Here, in FL, windshield repair/replacement is actually no deductible by law. Your insurance company has to pay, and they can't charge you your deductible.

They said they would pay for a repair, but not for a replacement.
Now, there are guys at the car wash that hit on all cars driving up. They repair windshields. They see nicks that you need a microscope to see. They don't charge the customer a nickel. All you do is show proof of insurance and they charge them.
So, needless to say, everytime I'm at the car wash, I get a windshield makeover.
F the insurance companies.

This is somewhat off topic but why the model in your avitar (barbie griffin) not spend the extra money for a better boob job?

Back on topic, don't repeated claims have an effect on your rates?

I think they look great. Not perfect, but great.

Had windshield repaired three times in three years. No change in rates.

Actually, my rate just dropped substantially because of the addition of another vehicle. I just bought a Yaris. Massive discounts with two cars and renters insurance from the same company.

On a side note: the original windshield and my first replacement were PPG products. When Harmon Glass replaced it, it was another manufacturer. (Can't remember off the top of my head.)

The PPG shields cracked VERY easily. A small pebble impact would spider web very quickly. (Almost like the fit was poor and the glass was stressed.) The one installed by Harmon was hit by a small rock and it left a very small nick that didn't expand to a crack.

For those that have had cracking problems, were your windshields PPG built?
