Coilover Help JIC and Tein

Ok so after a break for about a year, and finally deciding to keep the Solara, I find that the modding bug is back... I got bogged down in suspension before (springs strut combos) and it kinda turned me off to the car. Now I find myself telling people "with all the money I spent I should have just done coilovers from the start"...

So with that in mind Id like to find out about coilovers.

1. There are two manufacturers that make coilovers for our cars Tein and JIC-Magic?

2. Either of these have adjustable ride height the goes up to stock height? If not how close?

3. Either of these more difficult to adjust than the others? If i have to take out those !@#$ back seats more than once forget it, you know what I mean, replacing the rear suspension is some Engineers sick joke.

4. Answers to any important questions I didnt ask about the coilovers?

Take it from a guywho's on his second set of coilovers. I currently have a custom set of JIC-FLTA2RS coilovers installed on my car. I upgraded from the FLT-A1US. I track my car regularly and need all the adjustability and stiffness I can get. I chose to go custom setup as I felt the regulat FLT-A2 wasnt up to spec for my driving style.

-The Tein coilovers are better for street because its softer. Its not designed as advanced as the JIC-FLT line but its stiffer than springs/shocks and you can lower it to your liking.

-JIC coilovers are the stiffest avalible for our cars and they have 3 levels. From lowest to higest SF1, A1US, FLTA2, and custom. Custom is where you get to request your own spring rates and damper valving to match.

-Tein, I dunno where the adjustment is at.

-JIC-FLTA1US--> Top adjustment for front and rear (you gotta take the rear seats out to adjust shock)

-JIC-FLTA2--> Adjustment is on the bottom for front and rear. Very easy access just by reaching behind the tires. No need to take off the tire or raise the car.

Personally I have both upgraded front and rear sway bars (TRD and whitleline) to help out and its a world of difference.

Castro thanks for the info on the JIC coilovers. I was getting a little lost compairing the different lines on their website. Sounds like the FLTA2s are worth the upgrade, especially cause you can adjust stiffness from the bottom.

Can the SF1, A1US, and A2 all be adjusted from stock ride height? or is there a built in drop that is unavoidable?

Still need some info about the Tein Coilovers from someone. Where and what are the the adjustment controlls and what range of ride heights?

No built in drops. From the A1US and FLTA2, you can actually raise it higher than stock. (dunno why you'd do that) And they can go so low that your tires won't even be able to turn.

Both the FLT-A1US and Tein coilovers are twin tube meaning that the adjustments are probably goign to be on the top.

The FLTA2 is an inverted mono-tube, so the damper setup is upside down which puts the adjustment in the bottom.

such as on a long road trip, if you have a lot of stuff, you might want to crank the rear up really high, so that when you load up your trunk and back seat, your ride still looks even (like you see on limos with their air shocks cranked way up).

Don't forget that the Tien coilovers don't have pillowball mounts for their setup. JIC does. Just wanted to add.

I wouldn't suggest that because the second you hit a bump, the strut will want to extend, but there isn't enough stroke for it to go anywhere resulting in a really nasty pop of sorts (it was happening to me for awhile). I'm sure that can't be good at all for the strut.

Im getting alittle cranky about it too. Im tired of driving with the stock Y pipe with my current SAFC setting. Very restrictive.

depends how serious you are with your driving...

imho, the flt-a2 is overkill for the streets, but just right for the track... they're a pain in the arse to tune.

I put one (right rear) about a half-inch off from the rest and I couldn't even drive straight

What do the pillowball mounts cost for the Teins.

And these adjustments that are on the top of the coilovers are for stiffness right? The ride height is controlled by the placement of the rings around the threaded struts right?
