Aftermarket Alarm

Postby SirMacDaddy » Sun Oct 08, 2006 5:20 pm

I have a lot of questions concerning the OEM alarm for my 2001 SE...i've tried searching but nothing....so here we go

Does anyone have bad range with their keyless entry...key fob. most of the times i have to be no more than 20 feet from the car for it to work. it has terrible range. I tried changeing the battery and nothing. Does anyone know why or how to fix this?

Also does anyone know how or has ever put in a remote start in a manual transmission car? is it possible? if so how?

Last one....how hard is it to install an aftermarket alarm system? my friend has a gs430 and it took him and his buddy 14 hours to get it all fully installed? is that just with lexus' or is that a normal time?

Thanks for all your support and answers

to answer your question:

bad range? i dont know, my didnt come with keyless entry so i had an aftermarket unit on my car

remote start? yes you could, but if your park your car in the gear, than you will be in big trouble

how hard is it to install an aftermarket alarm? should be just like other cars. however, if you want to use the factory remote, it will gets more tricky. if you just go straight with an afermarket unit, it should not be too hard. my girlfriend has her 2004 solara installed an aftermaket alarm along with factory remote. it costed her $300 to did it. my leuxs, so far no on can integrate an aftermarket unit along with my factory remote (which is in the keyfob).

poor range is attributed to the antennae of the alarm. if your OEM alarm is having poor range, take it to the dealer and have them check and/or extend the antennae.

it's possible, but whoever installs it will have to bypass the clutch and usually when this happens, you'll be able to start the vehicle WITHOUT pushing in the clutch afterwards. two challenges you face to get this install done:

*someone simply WILLING to do it (liablility issues hinder alot of shops from doing a remote start in a M/T vehicle)

**someone skilled enough to install it (meaning that they won't compromise the use of the clutch...it'll still work after the install)

lexus gs300+ are a bitch to put an aftermarket alarm in. 14 hours sounds about right for people who are fairly new to alarm installs. the shop i work at usually bangs out alarms at 2 hours per vehicle; lexus' take about 4-6.

i have the auto-start on my manual.

sometimes it works on the first try, sometimes it doesnt.
i dont use it much unless its freaking cold outside so i can warm up the car inside and out. but the range on it is pretty good... supposedly "up to a mile" is what the guy told me, but its just eye sight really.

yes. a serious liability problem, if you get it done, dont let anyone drive ur car. most people who drive stick, automatically put the car in first when they park, just incase they forget the e-brake. and if ur cars in first, and u auto start that sheeez.... ur skrewwed.
