LED taillights for Gen 1.0 (w/pics of housings now)

Postby made in china » Wed Sep 13, 2006 12:36 pm

I'll have pics of a actual mock-up soon. I bought prototyping PCBs and that spare tail so I can get everything as I want it.

I think I may even add motion and strobe functions to the tails after seeing what other people are integrating into their LED conversions. For cost, the motion and strobe doesn't cost much in parts, I just need to develop a working model and fine tune the patterns and sequences....but I think with that function added people will be more interested in this conversion.

Anyway, expect to see a prototype soon..... :fadein:

This project sounds like a great idea. Good luck soldering all those LEDs on to the pcb.

yeah, each LED has four legs. And each taillight will be over 100 LEDs, so 400 joints per PCB. Then the control PCB is a bunch more.

I recieved all my proto PCBs, LEDs and components...now I am just waiting for my sacrificial eBay taillight and I'll be getting something up here soon.

BTW, I plan on including a LED board for the manual AC controls on this run of PCBs. I saw what someone on ToyotaNation did with breadboard and SMD LEDs in red and blue, and it looked super good. I can provide a actual engineered product like that, and since the PCBs cost the same it won't be too much hassle for me. So, expect to see a Manual AC control LED retro also.

Now you got my attention, if the blinkers would actually motion the direction and the brakes would strobe to prevent rearends I am 95% sold on a pair, and the plug and play core exchange may cost a little more but I'd rather have a complete set then fighting to make boards work in my existing units. I assume the LEDs are clear when off too. Just my opinion but if all the light groups were shaped like ((())) would look pretty cool and different then all the others.

Can you make the brake lights function like the ones on this link?

The strobing feature is a safety feature used mostly on motorcycles, see the link I attached.

I do have a prototype 10 led sequencer for expiramenting. If interested. Plus you could probably find that pcb diagram on the net somewhere as well.
