The front strut mounts generally get the most damage done to. I replaced all my mounts cause i didnt want to be cheap and do a half as$ job. You may only need to replace the front ones. The clunking sounds come from a worn mount/bearing. You didnt hear it with your old struts like with many old parts becuase they had worned to just fit eachother and somehow work. Ask a mechanic, with old parts you either have to let it be or replace everything. People who replaced their suspension years ago when their cars were relatively new didnt have this problem, only people who replace a nearly shot suspension.

Think about this:
The reason you get the sound is the strut rattling around the mount when you hit bumps and there is any movement of the strut, it makes metal hit metal. The BEARING in the strut is what keeps the strut from hitting the metal of the mount.

Just to let you guys know, the bearing is not a absorber of any sort it is there to turn the strut from the mount when turning the wheels.... There is no need to swap out the mounts or the bearing unless they are broken.

BTW, I fixed An's car yesterday.
