That seems like a good idea in theory, but in it's actual application, I don't know if it would really work. The main caveat of the air filter portion mounted in the engine compartment is that when stopped, the intake sucks up hot air from the engine. Although the heat shield on the model you show probably helps a little, I don't think the air tube would help much at all. The reason is that there's nothing that will force cold air from outside the engine department through the tube and into the air filter while stopped. So imo, it's basically the same as not having the tube when you're stopped. It might help a little while you're driving, but when you're driving, cold air enters the engine anyway, such as the through grill and other places. But it is an interesting sort of contraption.

there's no force pushing air into the intake... it's just the force the engine uses to suck it in... it would actually become a restricting factor (defeats the purpose of the intake itself). However, if you could get the tube to aim into the filter (instead of the little 'compartment') it should help... good find though :D my friend made a PVC PIPE CAI for his 89 Corolla... who knows if it has gains... but it's a CAI nonetheless :P

One thing! The engine is still hot, and a little sun shade will not make heat go away from that area! :-?

That design is pointless because your stock airbox is routed the exact same way. Having that "shield" is useless because hot air will get drawn through the cracks when the hood is closed down. And because the hood has cross braces, that shield is not gonna properly seal out the hot air. So really the design is creative but pointless.
