Wheel offset question, I've searched and I don't understand!

Ok, so if I'm getting new wheels the minimum offset they must have is +50mm (stock, right?) or more offset? What would happen if I got +40mm, +42, or even +45mm offset wheels, would they fit and would I need spacers? I don't understand offsets!

Check out this site...it gives you so much info about our solara wheel fitment and a visual of how the offsets work. I found this using the Search option and I leared a lot from this site thanks to a great find by one of our SG members.

http://www.rims-n-tires.com/rt_specs.jsp?pageTitle=Wheel-Tire%20size%20comparer&showRim1=1&showTire1=1&sw1=215&ar1=60&bd1=16&rd1=16&rw1=7.5&et1=50&showRim2=1&showTire2=1&sw2=235&ar2=35&bd2=20&rd2=20&rw2=8.0&et2=38&text1=&text2=

anyways so supposedly here are some info on our gen2s:

(668x215m(m). Bolt pattern: 5x114.3 (5x4.5). Offset: 35 to 50 mm. Tires up to 688x235mm. Rims up to 21x8.5".

Hope this helps.

So would these wheels fit on the Gen 2 Solara? They're Lexus RX330 18" chrome. I would love these on my car. Stock looking, chrome and 18's.

^^ Thanks man! That was really quite useful on the offset issue!

Looks like I can go with 20x8.5 rims with 45 offset then... I should be ordering my custom Foose rims this next week! :D

Hmmm - looks like with 8.5 wide rims I really want a 40 offset then... not 45

Check out this link:

http://www.bigwheels.net/?location=whee ... cle=Solara

2006 Toyota Solara, 20x8.5, 5x114.3 bolt pattern, 40 offset

or 34 offset with the regular Foose Speedster:

http://www.bigwheels.net/?location=whee ... edster%205

20x8.5, 5x114.3 bolt pattern, 34 offset

**EDIT: These specs are NOT correct! (See Below...):o

I never saw this patricular wheel / tire size calculator / comparer before, but its the BEST one I've seen so far. I wish I would have known about this when I was shopping for wheels and tires back in 9/04. It would have made it much easier for me.

Maybe one of the Solaraguy moderators can make a sticky note with the link to this page?

Well - I just spoke to the guy whose going to be making my rims - he says that 20x8.5 on the Solara (both Gen 1 and Gen 2) should be 42 offset. He drives a Gen 1 Solara (I'm trying to get him on here too!) so he really knows the car... and since they are the manufacturer for Foose wheels as well as MHT, DUB, Niche, Jesse James and Nuenzigs, I think he knows what he's talking about! ;)

Plugging in the numbers...

Image

Yeah, yeah, yeah... I KNOW the 245/35/20 is a slightly larger dia than OEM 215/55/17 - but I want as much tire on the rim that I can squeeze on and get a little width. Not into the "big rim with tire paint" look!
