Steptronic

Steptronic

Postby eh0013 » Wed Aug 16, 2006 8:12 am

Possibly a stupid question requiring a very quick answer. When one switches for automatic transmission to steptronic, does it always start at 4th gear? I notice this at whatever speed i'm at....whether going 60 or 0 mph. I would have thought that it would be more practical for it to start at the gear you are currently on. Example: I am on a standstill at a stop light....I move the shifter to the left and the indicator shows "4"....I would have to shift it three down to get it to the gear I want. Is this how it should normally function? I've had the car two years but was not compelled to ask 'til now  . Thanks for any info.

On this I would say use the search function.

You'll find something like...

Down2thec wrote:Simplest description... It sets your top gear for the auto-transmission. That's all it does.

Thanks for the tip. I did try to search but used "steptronic" instead of "tiptronic"....did not yield any. Thanks again.

Or "4th gear" or just "gear". Don't quit after one search - use some creativity.

You seem to really hate it...I'm good to read signs when I see them ! :P
hehe

I like it...it's not perfect for sure because it's not enough agressive...not much thant the normal D drive but at least I control the gear I want to be when I want power...in city (2) when I go on highway (3)...from a stop (1). I put on D only on cruisin'... 8)

Lets put it this way...

I had left it in 3rd at a stop sign yesterday (usually "downshift" to 2nd in normal driving but was preoccupied by passenger in the car) - waited for a few cars to go by and then pulled out into the flow of traffic with what I am usually accustomed to, timing the acceleration to quickly get me up to the speed of the oncoming traffic. I romped on the accel and pulled out, only to have the the fuking 2-second LAG bog down and I see cars quickly approaching my rear-view mirror! :o It seriously feels like a flooded Holly 4-barrel carb when it does that!!

I quickly pulled it down into 1 and it took off in a jolt where I could then up-shift as normal to avoid being slammed in the rear.

This isn't only irritating as all hell, but incredibly fuking dangerous! If I ever get rear-ended because of it, Toyota is going to have a BIGGASS law suit on its hands!!

I just wish they'd take this problem seriously and FIX IT!!!

So yeah - I'm fuking PISSED about it!

Have you guys complained to the dealers (and wrote to Toyota after they tell you they can't do anything?) Perhaps look up the '04 threads about it and find the guys who wrote articles about it then. Tag them with a letter saying it's back for '06. I feel for ya. I cursed that ECU for 15 months.

I've complained to dealership and will open an official complaint with Toyota Cust Service National (though there's nothing the dealer can do - so it's not a dealer prob - it's a factory/engineering issue!) - but needless to say, it's very real and very serious problem nonetheless. :(

Call The Toyota Customer Experience Center 800-331-4331. Dealers will just give you the run around.
