Coat over the leather is peeling off.

Just been to the dealer.

The person helped me (Ricardo) told me he didn't get return call from one(Sue) who was going to fix the problem. He told me he called another guy and left message "again"! and he will going to give him my number so he can schedule an appoinment with me.

I asked him why not just replace whole panel, and what he said was manager will not change whole panel because he thinks "it looks like something I did to it."

It apears they are fixing my problem just because I bought my car from that dealer, not because the part is bad!

I don't think I will ever buy Toyota again.

IMPORTANT!! You need to contact Toyota Customer Service HQ Immediately!

Call 800-331-4331 and ask to open up a case. They will take all your details and determine if you indeed have a case. Since the dealer refuses to take care of a real warranty issue, they will make sure you're a happy customer!

I had a major issue with a totally fukked dealer here in SoCal who wouldn't honor a TSB on my Tundra (BTW - NEVER go to Power Toyota of Buena Park!!) - but Toyota MADE them do the work for me to my satisfaction!!

After all else fails - that's when you have to take matters into your own hands!

Good luck! :D

I will wait about a week to see what the dealer will do for me. If they fix it right I'll be happy.

The picture above is of a door panel of an SLE. My SLE has the same door panel. No matter what trim level of the SE you buy, you get the one that does not have the leather on it, like the one that is peeling above. Yes, there are 2 different door panels- one for the SE level (no leather) and the one for the SLE- (has leather).

Oh... the thread title is wrong then. I thought we were talking leather. Someone is confused and after a second look at that pic, I think you're right. So PXL and I have nothing to worry about. That also explains why there's no elbow dents on that pic. I was trying to imagine driving without putting your arm there.

I don't know about the SE, but my SE Sport has leather trim on the arm rest... It doesn't look the same as the SLE trim, but if you touch it, it's definitely leather...

Yeah - the SLE (at least the convertible) has the sewn ridges like D2TC has shown in his photo. Its pretty supple and definitely leather. I've gotten mine wet (rain from the roof) several times, as well as suntan lotion (gotta SPF with the top down!) ;) - and I use Meguiar's Leather Conditioner Wipes once every month or so, it's been exposed to quite a bit and no probs to date.

So - about contacting Toyota HQ - that's exactly why they can help you plead your case. If the dealer doesn't take care of you - don't just accept it - FIGHT BACK! That's why they have that # to call - let them do the dirty work for you! :D

I have the same problem that has been highligfhted in the picture provided of the peeling armrest. It is indeed vinyl with a protective "glue protective" covering. Well, this "protective" covering wears down since it is rubbed on a daily basis by the elbow and forearm, plus the oils from the skin along with moisture that comes in from the rain wears it out. I have tried to spay paint it with vinyl paint and that just cracks. I am still trying to figure out a solution since it isn't worth arguing over and opening up lawsuits IMO. I will put my name on any lists to help you guys thoughg. Any suggestions would be helpful to me btw. Thanks.

Guys,
I'm having the same problem (even worse than what i see on the photos in this thread) - the vinyl coating on the door armrest started to flake and peel off. Is there a way to fix this yourself? Like a spray-on vinyl coating, or a way to replace the armrest without replacing the whole door panel (as it is ~$600 just for the panel - d'oh!) My car is a '05, and it's out of warranty.
Thanks!
