Switching Cars

I really hate to post something as n00b as this, but I'm too indecisive. I'm going up to trade my 2000 Celica GT-S for a 99 Solara SLE V6 today most likely. I like the smoother ride, the quiet, and the automatic since I'm in traffic for half of my life and on the highway for the other half.

Is there anything that I should look out for that I won't like on the Solara, and any pointers on going to look at the car? Thanks in advance!

i think the only thing is that it'll be slower than ur celica, other than that, im sure you'll love just like the rest of us do.

As with getting any used car, i would do a carfax report and just look over the car. Inquire about maintence habits. Check tire tread and bargin the price from there

The solara is faster then that celica buy the way it might have a faster kick but in the long run---it will dust the #$^@ at of the celica.

anyway make sure that the oil has always been change----get proof of that
ask when was the last time they changed the timing belt?---make sure you get proof of that----if it has alot of milage and the belt has not been changed---not good

when you test run it ----run the ^%$#%$ out of it and see what kind
of expression the dealer has when you do this.

look up the vin number and see if the car has many owners if it does
not good ------why?----its hard to varify how the car was treat it.

remember the solara can look good in the outside----do not let them
know that you do not know crap about the inside of the car and that you demand proof.

Oh really? A stock GT-S manual will smoke any Auto V6 Solara. It will match a manual V6 Solara but the Celica will pull away once it hits lift. Handling? The Celica will smoke the Solara hands down...even with an upgraded suspension. Are you forgetting the Solara is on the Camry chassis. A chassis intended for comfort and plushness mainly for family hauling.

I think you're talking about Carfax. Carfax does not tell you how the vehicle was treated. It only tells you mileage history and title history. Nothing else.

I don't know how things work down in the States, but up here, you can actually track a vehicle's history but its serial number providing the vehicle has been serviced by an authorized dealer, no matter where they are. The sticky part is having a connection at a dealership who will feed you the information that you're looking for.
It kinda' comes in handy when you find a used Toyota Solara with a few upgrades that catches your eye :wink:

It really depends on your needs though. Could you imagine trying to fit a family in that celica. Personally I love the celica too, but the Solara is room and safe and still fun to drive

we've actually fitted 5 people (including myself) in my celica...aaah college spring break days!

celica is celica...solara is solara...stock celica gt-s comes with great suspension set up...from what i've read the handeling for stock celica and acura Rsx are the 'best in the industry'...for the not soo dollar values of the car...Like flip said..celica with 6sp will SMOKE an auto solara..anyday! the best match would be 5sp solara..but the handling will be the edge for the celica! Bottom line: if you are looking for handling and cornering wildly..keep the celica..if your into more space and need room for friends/relatives..get the solara...both are great cars...I'd personally choose the celica (if your a bachlor!)

You could do that granted you know someone at a toyota service dept the car was brought to every single time. In most cases, people usually never go back to the dealer the purchased their car from for service on a regular basis. Dealerships here in the states don't have linked computers to show what service history a particular car has. Unless the vehicle was taken to one dealership exclusively for service, it's unlikely to track records of service practices on a car without proof of receipt.

Yep, I wanted to pull my service history for my celica...only thing that i can pull up is the service done at THAT dealership, if you switched states, or dealership in the life of the car...you need to go back to every dealership..(kinda retarted)...but I agree with Flip....it would be nice (but pain in the rear end for a DBA) if all dealerships has a shared database of service records..but how many average toyota owners go to dealerships, and let alone..how many service their cars regularly...

One of the reasons I'm trading is that I'm getting married in 3 months and need something she can drive also(an automatic). I somehow fit 7 in my Celica a year or so ago...the little guy went in the hatch :lol:

. The handling and acceleration is better in the Celica, but with my current needs, I think the Solara will fit them better considering I'll be driving through either RTP or Charlotte 5 o clock traffic(if you're from NC, you feel my pain :wink:

). I'm sure that they have the typical Toyota reliability. I'll be sure to check all the things above. Thanks for all the help!

nobody take offense to this but... i personally think the Celica is a chick car! everyone i know who has a celica is a girl. i am not saying its a bad car at all, what i am saying is that A LOT of girls drive them, which could be a good or bad thing i guess.

Yeah I notice that too. I rarely see guys drive Celicas up here. If you're from San Jose too and tell me that I'm wrong, then you're not from the Northern part
