Windows can be controlled without keys in ignition

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before. Tonight, I forgot to roll up my windows before I turned off the engine and took out the keys. I had the keys in my hand, and was able to control the power windows up or down. I was suprised by this cool feature and test it again and found out that we can control the windows until one of the doors are open. Do you guys know what the real purpose of this feature is for?

Um...it's in case you forget to put your windows up and have already turned your car off and taken out the keys.

It's on a timer also, when time runs out, it shuts off.

Do you read your car manual?

It's timed and doesn't work after you open the door.

extended power

Postby GaryPSU » Mon Jun 19, 2006 1:00 pm

My last few cars (GM products) as well as my Solara keeps accessory power for a period of time, or until a door is opened. Not just windows, but radio, etc. Haven't you ever noticed that the radio is still playing with the key off until a door is opened? I guess that this feature is for us New Jersey guys who aren't allowed to pump their own gas. We can turn the key off at the pump, and still open the window to order the gas and then again to pay the man.

Well, I have the retained accessory power, but windows only. Your Solara has retianed power for the radio too?

Retained power

Postby GaryPSU » Mon Jun 19, 2006 4:11 pm

My mistake - just windows on my Solara. My wife's GM SUV and my prior GM cars had retained power for all accessories - including the radio.

Uh, where on the manual is this? Maybe I just don't have it on mine. :drinking:

You must, if you have on 05. I doubt that this was a new feature for 06. I can look in my manual, but it might be different than yours if they formatted the manual differently.

Yeah, the front windows work, but the convertible top doesn't. Usually, if I have my windows down, I have my top down too. It would be nice if this feature was extended to the top.

Even if I only have the windows down, the 'all windows up/down' control doesn't work either. The only window controls that work are the controls on the doors. And since the rear windows in the convertible aren't on the doors, you can't get the rear windows up - only the front.

Do I see an electrical mod in my future?
