Stock talk about the Generation 2 and 2.5 Toyota Solara which was released in 2004-2007

Maybe it's just me, but...

Say What

Postby JMSinMaryland » Thu Jul 13, 2006 3:11 pm

First I have to disagree 100% The Gen 2.5 looks a LOT better than the Gen 2. Not that any Gen after 1 (1999-2001) had the luxury/sporty look like the original. Toyota is not trying to go after "boy racers" with the Solara. The Scion tC is for that crowd. Starting at 25k+ puts it out of their reach. Secondly I don't know of anyone that was thinking Lexus SC430, Infinity G35 OR Toyota Solara. NOT. The Toyota Solara competes with the Accord Coupe and other domestic coupes/convertibles.

Really...nobody looked at a $28k G35 base model (in 2005) with leather compared to a $25k SLE Solara? Hmmm, you missed the mark on that assumption. An SC430 is so far out of the G35/Solara market, but it looks like a Solara from the rear. The Accord is a direct competitor, but I didn't know domestic car companies made anything besides trucks. lol.

Pontiac has the G6 coupe and hardtop convertible. The rear looks very much like the Solara. The interior looks oh so cheap compared to our Toyotas. I will not be in the market for a new car for a number of years, but I'm not sure what will be there for me in the way of a mid sized two door or convertible that's appointed nicely. As to the 2007. I guess it's a matter of taste. I've yet to see one in person, but from the pictures, I would have to say that I think my 06 does have a better looking front. I like the gauges on my 06 better too. However, I do like the blue dash lights on the gauges at the top of the dash. I really don't have a problem with the rear bumper as some have. The 350Z has lights in the bumper too, but they are turn signals. I do like the HID lights that can be had on the 07. That's one feature my Acura CL had, that I sort of miss. Bluetooth also is a welcomed addition to the Nav system of the 07. I think the 07's Nav is voice controlled. Is that correct?

Funny, but I just don't think there's enough difference between the 2 and 2.5 to be a lover of one, and a hater of the other. I think there's just a little too much emotion running over in this topic. :agrue:

However, I agree in that I would not buy a 2.5 strictly because of the look of the fog lights. That's an attention getter, and I think they went with the wrong look there. It might grow on me, but I doubt it. I like the 2.5 grill better, but that's because the 2 grill is pretty weak. The 2.5 grill is better, but still not great.

The tail lights are definitely nicer on the 2.5, but I can go with either there and be fine with it.

The stuff on the inside with the stereo, etc, is better, but I can upgrade that stuff pretty easily - and would with either version.

In short, I'm not going to be trading in my Gen 2 (despite the constant harrassing offers I get from the local dealers).

Call me crazy, but I do not like the LED tails. I dont understand what all the buzz is about with them. Ya, they are different, but surely not different enough to spend a ton of cash on them, trade them out with Gen 2 tails and lose your reverse lights.

The only things I like about the Gen 2.5 is the HID with levelizing, the new nav system with blue tooth, the blue climate controls and the shift handle. The rest, well, lets just say I dont like.

There... I finally said it. Ugh.. I've been holding it in for so long and just finally had to let it out.

It's ugly! The front now resembles a Hyundai! It looks so cheapened! There are nice aspects of the Gen 2.5, but none of them are looks.

Maybe I just haven't seen a good picture of one with ground effects yet... but at this point, I don't hold out much hope.

The front of the Gen2 Solara (with ground effects) looks like a mean shark to me... or fangs or something! The new Solara looks like a Tiburon.

... yes Tiburon means shark, but I mean Hyundai.

This is only my opinion and mean no offense to anyone who simply loves the new Solara.

the Gen 2.5 Solara doesn't look that bad. It just looks strange to many of us. It is one of those cars that grow on you as time passes by. Remember when the Gen 2 came out, most of the Gen 1-1.5 owners said that it was ugly.

Only thing I do not like about the 2.5 is the front bumper. I actually like the rear and think it fits the car well. Certainly nothing that would cause me to replace my 2004. Only weakness of this car is its transmission, and it doesn't allow drivers to take full advantage of the engine (even if it is on the lower side for HP in today's cars) because of the sloppy shifts.

Oh, and the friggin' rattles but I think that is the case with most Toyotas, Hondas, Fords, Chevys...heck, most cars!
Moved on to better things...

I'm with you but I'm sure it'll grow on us. I'd bet that the Gen 1 guys spent the better part of 2004 hating the Gen2 look.

Yeah, at first it did to me too, but I gotta say it's like the Infiniti FX35; looked like a constipated cat at first but now I accept it.

that one made me laugh...constipated cat. I used to dog on the Dodge ram design when it came out in ~1995 and it turned out as one of my favorites for trucks (which I would never buy). I'll bet gen1 guys were hatin' all over the gen2 when it came out. Hard to get over the look of the 2.5 though making it square in the front.
