Automatic Sportshift Usage?

Automatic Sportshift Usage?

Postby RDKamikaze » Sat Jun 24, 2006 1:21 am

Is it ok if I drive in the manual mode on my sport shift solara all the time? Is it made only for passing people and such, or am I not wearing anything down faster by using it? I'm not running it harder than I would automatic mode (still not hard), but I just love my stick truck and I adore most of the feel of a stick. Let me know, thanks!

P.S. Does anybody else drive in the manual mode on their sport shift auto?

I use it 100% of the time. The car just slops around otherwise and is undriveable IMO.

It better be designed to last... nothing's stated in the user's manual that you shouldn't use it! ;)

Bastards won't give us a manual tranny then I'm gonna work over the "sportshift" AT like a MOFO!! :D :evilbat:

I barely use mine, mostly as a novelty when I'm bored. I find though, that when I do use it, I sometimes forget that I am and forget to shift...so, I just leave it in auto. Also, I think there's enough power for passing and such, that I don't really need it.

PXL: You seem to be really down on the Solara engine lately. I know you say you like the styling, but really, if the engine is that bad...

Our car is FAR from undriveable.

Meh - just underwhelmed with its performance overall - especially the LAG issues with the sloppy tranny. The acceleration is okay - I can accept that but would like more. I just find I'm getting kinda bored with the performance issues.

Weird too, because I was never bored with my V6 Tundra and the only real performance mod I did to it was a TRD drop in filter and a Cold Air mod to the airbox. Everything else was about the suspension.

Unless I can do some radical upgrades to this car to improve its performance and keep my interest, I'm afraid I'm going to grow tired of it within the first two years. :-?

my friend asked me a queston i dont know how to answer it, when you are driving over 50 mph, is there a lock or such thing when you downshift it to like first gear? pretty much in his old cruddy car he tried to downshift from 5th gear to first at high speeds and it wouldnt let him.

It's all electronically gauged. Try going around 30 and downshifting to 1st. It will stay in 2nd and do a funky beep at you.

So yes, we have an electronic 'lock' that prevents us from our own stupidity (kinda like our rev limiter completely shuts out our power before we redline)...

Yeah - but thankfully, you can go up to almost 80mph in 3rd! (or it will downshift under hard accel if you're above it) :D

Mid-range perfromance is pretty good on this car. Just trying to get this fatass body rolling from a start is a challange. ;)

I use it occasionally just for fun and to "retrain" the car to shift the way I want it to shift. If I am using it, I usually lock out 5th gear so the car downshifts faster.

How does using the manual shift re-train the transmission??

Also, what do you mean by "lock it out of 5th gear"?

The car seems to always revert back to a more economical shift pattern. The car learns your driving style and it seems whenever I aggressively shift using the sportshift mode, the car automatically shifts better.

By locking out fifth gear, I mean setting it so the dash gauge shows "4" instead of "5." That means the highest gear the transmission can shift into is 4th gear.
