Hiya fellas... (me :n00b: )

Just a small posting\poll on what I think is a bit annoying. I own a 2005 (purchased Feb.2006) Solara SE with 5-speed manual tranny. I kinda miss the electronic whirring noise the engine had when it was new, but dislike what seems like normal engine noise.

It is understandable that an old engine would have lots of valve type noise, but not my babyed  engine. It has only 7500 miles, and its running on Mobil-1 10W-30 synthetic and no improvement. Some ppl mention using 10W-40 on their Scion tCs and reducing noise a little but I don't think thats necessary (the oil helping me achieve 35mpg on high-speed highway driving). I hear valve adjusting = changing the lifters...

Anybody care to share his/her opinion on the matter? :multi:

btw, those people who use 10w-40 on their new car are retarded. that reduce your power and fuel efficient.

I don't really want v6 level of refinement...but damn; the Corolla, Celica, a Honda CRV...isn't as noisy as mine. How do I know if the "noise" is normal? I don't wanna be a real noob and goto dealer with complaint...

yeah, i've never thought 2az being that noisy. of course it's noisier than v6, but for 4 cyl, it's quieter than many other cars i've driven.
especially compare to corolla.
i had that as loaner when my car was at dealer for service, and i felt that car is so much noisier than mine....

hope your problem will be solved soon.

Just add an Injen or something; make your car sound like it's more tuned for performance rather than just stock noise.

Oh, the cabin is awesome...not noticeable inside. Its when the windows are rolled down that it kinda bothers me. I think it might probably be normal valvetrain noise. Maybe the TRD exhaust will make the noise go away... :turn-l:

I've brought my car in the dealership for oil changes and tire rotations for the past year and told them twice about the engine compartment being abnormally noisy. They say that's how it is because it's a 4 cylinder. When I go to pick up friends, they would know it is me outside cause they would recognize the noise.

I don't think my car is noisy at all. I have the 2AZ-FE, and the only time when it is "noisy" is when I floor it to pass people on the roads.

Well, I think I may have exagerated a bit. I never intented to say that the engine itself is noisy; it was more of a concern on what I believed was valvetrain noise. I know its a big and less refined engine than other toyota engines, but I can't help comparing. I don't think I've heard a tC running on idle that is as noisy as mine...can't help think that when the engine is hot, its even noisier. Guess I'll get over it. Kinda picky myself! Anyway, I think its a great car and probably will stick with it past the drivetrain warranty...lets see what happens.
