transponder key programming-one more time

Hi..

I have a 2005 Camry V6..I am new here and hope this is an OK place to post my question.

I am trying to figure out if a new key I have can be programmed in-car, rather than at the dealership.

I searched the forums and found two methods described, neither of which worked in my car.

Does anybody know for sure if the key can or cannot be programmed in a 2005 car? And do you have the instructions for an 05?

Thanks for the help..

There's been plenty of traffic concerning programming a remote, but I think the key's are not DIY. They have a chip in them and the transponder is coded for them. Lose the keys, replace the transponder (from what I've heard... no personal experience w/ it.)

No, you can reprogram the keys, but they change the programming mode activation algorhythm every 2-3 model years, and you don't have to toss away old keys; my car came delivered with a valet key (I guess CarMax didn't know).

Anyway, they had an offer to give a free spare key and reimburse for the manual, but when I said to them it was valet, they reprogrammed the valet key and gave me __2__ new master keys and a plain one without the transponder :D , but then again if they had to go through the trouble of sending the ECU in to have it reflashed (can't reprogram without a master key), I guess they better!

Bottom line: You don't have to get rid of the old keys you have. However when you are programming new keys, have ALL the keys you want programmed present (note: up to 4 keys may be programmed), otherwise it'll erase the codes for the old one and the ignition would crank but not start (at least in the 99 of what happens when I use the generic key). It is also able to be done DIY, just keep what I said earlier in mind about the algorhythm, so search the forums, print out all 3 and find out which one works.

However, you might want to do this on a street 2 blocks from the dealership in case it falls through. Just a suggestion so that it's not my fault  .
