Is something happening wiht your alternator??

Personally i would get an upgraded one, but thats only because i have subs. The stock alternator is a little weak, so i'd upgrade it

Here are some sites for you to check out:

www.mralternator.com
www.gostartech.com
www.bestamericaind.com
www.egrproducts.com
www.mechman.com
www.wranglernw.com
www.ampman.com
www.powermaxx.com
www.mean-green.com

The stock alternator is 80 amps according to Gunman, an upgraded one should put you at around 130-150amps, maybe even more :D

If that is the case, you're probably better off to buy a rebuilt alternator and trade the used one in for core.

Check with Napa, Pep Boys, Autozone, etc., and make sure the one they sell has a lifetime warranty, since some only offers a 1-yr warranty. It will probably run about $200-$250 w/core exchange. However, you still get the stock amperage.

peter: Autozone alternarots are crap! YEah, if you know how remove the alternator and basically DIY completely yourself, then its deal, howeber...a lot of us (at celica.net) are having to take them back yearly.....The cost for labor everytime can add up. Question: why are you wanting to replace? (upgrade..or because the old one is at its last leg..and if so..how many miles on your solara??)

Na, normal idle is around 6-700. There is a way to adjust the idle. A lot of guys have had to do it with the supercharger. Maybe someone could help you out, i'm not sure how to do it

I used to get all these weird electrical problems with my celica. The battery wouldn't hold a charge more than 30 min(even with new battery), battery light would come on if I went over 4K rpms, but would go off if I turned the fan to high. The wipers would come on while in the off position, when I jumped the battery. Oh, and the lights would dim. Anyway, it turned out to be the voltage regulator on the alternator. So I ended up buying a new alternator and battery(the bad alternator ruined the battery I had)

Peter: I think before venturing into a new alternator...do these things:
1. Gain access to a repair manual and adjust your idle rpm's..what you describe is too low
2. Go to AutoZone and get your battery checked (free)
3. Also when there get your alternator checked (also free)

If they find problems with batter/alternator..at least you know what's kaput...but do the idle adjustments first! Good luck....
