windscreen for Gen 2 convertible

windscreen for Gen 2 convertible

Postby dssdoc » Thu Apr 06, 2006 6:26 pm

2 questions about the optional windscreen, as we have a dog who loves riding with the convertible's top down:
1) when it's "up" (rather than disconnected and stowed) will my dog be able to jump into the backseat from outside (he does now, if I flop the front seat forward)? Or would I have to remove the windscreen to allow the pooch to get in?
2) if it's "up" will the dog enjoy the back seat ride -- or is the buffeting presently experienced back there be considerably worsened?
Thanks.

Unfortunately you won't be able tofind out for a long time since they've been putting it farther and farther behind any release date! Unless you can find one used or make one from scratch yourself, that is!

We will be able to answer that for you next week, the windscreen is waiting on the car delivery. I have not opened the package to see how the windscreen is mounted, but will let you know as our Lab will want to ride back there too.

Search for the pics in another thread from last summer. The thing pretty much blocks all access to the back seat. I doubt it will work for the dog. Also I haven't seen a postive review of it's performance in minimizing wind noise anyway.

wait... found a thread... http://www.solaraguy.org/viewtopic.php? ... onvertible
Last post on that thread doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement.

And here's a pic that I posted in This thread

Looks like you'd have to lift the puppy and toss him in the back. (hope it's not a Dane)

Toyota Solara Wind Screen

Postby dchev » Sun Apr 09, 2006 6:07 pm

Hello everybody,
You can find Solara Wind Screen on www.toyotapartspeople.com
Go to Toyota Solara 05, 06 Accessories (Comfort and Convenience Parts) and you can buy it for $271.40 plus shipping. It is original Toyota screen, and it comes from Toyota Dealer.
I have bought other parts in the past from this website, and they never let me down.
Good luck.

Not so, unfortunately...

Here's what their response was to me today:

"Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your inquiry. This part is currently on backorder. We are sorry
that we are unable to help you with this particular item at this time.

Sincerely,
Scott

Looking For = Toyota part# PT906-06040 - Wind Screen

You show this in stock, but nobody else seems to have it, so I want to
verify that you actually do have it in stock and not on back-order before I
place my order!"

So... I guess we're all just going to have to wait or make our own... :(

I think you made Jeff a happy camper. This is why I love this website so much. Way better than EBay.

I'm surprised to hear about a shortage of windscreens. I made the dealer seal the deal on my car last June by having him include the windscreen. He wasn't aware of the cost, he just wanted to make the deal, so he said sure!
The install was up to me to do, so I followed the instructions and was done in an hour, no problem at all. I even had to use a drill instead of a roto drill.
It works great on the highway in reducing the buffering wind.
By the end of last summer I did notice a flaw in design. The windscreen is designed to fold down to allow a rear view when the top is up. Well, after a bit of use during the summer, I wore out the hinge mechanism. On the drivers' side, there is a metal rod that is spring loaded, the rod catches in 'notches' in the screen that provide and sort of "locked" position. Being made of plastic, it's not going to last forever, heck, it didn't last 5 months.
I made an appointment with the dealer in April 06 to have the screen looked at, and when I got there, they had a brand new screen waiting for me. Out with the old, broken one, in with the new, and life is good again. No issues getting a screen, twice.
