Funny thing at goodyear today.

I was gettin my oil changed today, so I parked my car right out front and went in to set everything up and give them my keys.

Next thing I know I look over and some mechanic is getting in my car (I haven't even finished the paperwork yet, and I still have the keys). The guy behind the counter runs out to tell the mechanic he has the wrong car, turns out he thought my car was an infinity! Not a bad compliment, huh?

The bad news is that I need new tires. They quoted me $999.19 total for Goodyear Eagle RS-A ($198.00 each) with the road hazard plan. Do you guys think I could buy tires (maybe Yokohama AVID V4S) off Tire Rack and have them installed at that Good Year? I like the shop because they deal with the company my mom works for and I get the "prefered discount" on oil changes and the such.

Most shops I've dealt with will install tires purchased elsewhere (except Les Schwab). They will charge you an installation fee though so be sure to check and factor that into your TireRack pricing.

Shop around on tires though. I have never paid that much for tires - even when getting new shoes for my Supra (Ultra High Performance Summer Tires - Firehawk SZ50 255/35/17).

I wouldn't roll GY even if they were free. The best tire I have run across for all around use is the Yokohama Avid H4s. They can order other tires beside GY, have them match the TireRrack price. Jon.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this but go buy some good club michelin's from Costco and save a ton of money.

I recommend what I got : Goodyear Assurance Tripletread tires in 225/55/17 size with 80,000 mile life. Better ratings than the Yokohama AVid's and about the same price. Plus there are tons of Goodyear stores around the country which makes replacements much easier to get than any other tire. Their roadside assistance package is good too. So far, I have found it drives much better in all weather conditions than the stock tires did and corners quite a bit better too.

I was looking at the Goodyear Triple Tread Tires except they do not make them in 215/55R17's. I was looking at Tire Rack and they have the Yokohama AVID V4S Tires (215/55R17). After reading the reviews, I bought four of them. I took the tires to Sears and they installed them and the bottom line price was still lower from Tire Rack than Sears. I will say these tire are great. We drove to Florida and hit some nasty downpours and they tires performed great. That was a 2,500 mile trip. The tires are quiet and dry traction is much improved over the Bridgestones. These tires have a 60,000 mile warranty and have a 30 day test drive as well. The tread pattern is more aggressive as well. The tires were $106 and the road hazard was ~12 per tire. Sears charged $24 per tire for installation. Not a bad deal and will get some long life from these tires.

Yeah, I've pretty much decided on the Yokohamas. The only downside I can see is the snow traction, but in GA it rarely snows and when it does everything shuts down.

So my dad has a guy he uses for tires (my family is pretty much jewish mafia, they know a guy for everything) and they called the Yokohama distributor to request the Yokohama AVID V4S 215/55VR17, thats the size tirerack.com gave me. They said they never heard of it???

Anyway, they said they made a 225/50VR17 that would fit, and that they would balance and mount for $580 out the door. Tirerack is about $500 shipped and I would end up paying around $80 for installation anyway, right?

He said the tires were a little wider, but interchangable with the 215/55s. Wider is better, right?

How does that price and size sound?

The 225's will be a tad wider and will make your speedometer read slower by a few mph due to the lower profile. Just go with the 215's and at $106 per tire, not bad. When I went to Sears, the $24 per tire included mounting and balancing. The $580 is a really good price for being local. They should be able to get the 215's.

Good deal on the compliment, but not on the tires. I'm getting Yokohama Avid H4s put on my car soon, it's worth it, they're good tires.

from what i've experienced usually when you get someone to install your stuff they dont usually guarantee the parts so if something breaks they blame it on something but then its just wheels so i dunno if they can mess that up lol

I think I am getting a better deal on the install because I am getting the tires through them instead of ordering from tirerack.

I didn't want to push them about the 215/55s because he called the warehouse they get Yokohamas from and they said they never heard of that size. He said 225/50s are pretty much "interchangable". He didn't say anything about it affecting the speedometer. Isn't it just a wider tread? That doesn't affect the diameter of the tire, does it?

Is there ever an easy answer?

Time for some math!

.55x215 = 118.25 mm (this is the thickness of the tire)
.50x225 = 112.5 mm (ditto)

Difference of 5.75 mm
Both sidewalls: 11.5 mm = 0.45 in

So, your wheel and tire will be 0.45 in larger in diameter if you go with the 225/50
