Let's put it this way... we chose what we did for a reason.. Many of us probably considered the Mazda 6 as an option when initially looking as well...

i drove the Mazda 6 before i bought my Solara

i like how the Mazda 6 handles (i drove the wagon and i was still happy :) ), and i like how it looks (for both 5 dr hatch and wagon). i also like how the 6sp auto show you which gear its in even when its in the auto mode.

but i don't like how the V6 only have power up north of the rpm range (not what i would like if i am carrying people and stuff) and also how there is a jurk whenever you are in 2nd gear and come to a complete stop and shift to 1st automatically (for 6sp auto, and the previous 5sp also auto gearbox has heat issue). and the interior material is just below so-so

i came VERY close to buying one. but added the "made-in-USA mazda/Ford" build quality and reliability (resale value) to the whole package ... i ended up walking away.

compare to the Mazda 6, the Solara is just quiet, pull better down low (when you are in the right gear), better built and material, toyota reliability (and resale value)

you should just test drive both and see which one you like better (whats more important)

or just want a little longer (save a little more money) and go with the '07 camry with 6sp auto and 3.5L V6 :evilbat:

We had a '99 Mazda 626 that was purchased brand new... and it sounded hollow. Whenever you closed the door theres always like this hollow sound like its cheaply made. I just think toyota are far superior in quality and reliability.

At the time we were looking for a new car, we test drove a couple of candidates. The Mazda6, Toyota Solara SE Sport and Honda Accord LX.

Mazda6 - This car handled very well and is arguably the best handling car I have driven. The problem was the engine power. You could go deep into a corner and have zero exit power without nailing the gas pedal. The interior was cheap and had a lot of interior noise. Plus, the salesman was very pushy and that gets you no where. One big problem is the transmission temperature control. It runs very hot and is not good for long life. A lot of Mazda6 guys are adding a transmission cooler to help lower the temps.

Solara - The car does not corner as well but, has excellent range of useable power. It has more low end grunt than the Mazda and the transmission seemed smoother. I did turn a 14.81sec 1/4 mile and not bad. The interior was a huge selling factor. The fit and finish was perfect and is classy. Overall, it was the best car and to this day and have not regretted it. We now have 32K miles on the clock.

Accord - We test drove this car following the Mazda6 and before the Solara. The Accord has lots of low end as well and new what we were missing with the Mazda6. The Accord did not corner like the Mazda6 but, has a quiet interior. The interior was a little weird. The center console was laid out strange and did not like the ergonomics. Still, very nice and it was the most expensive.

That's why cp-e has such success w/ Mazda 6 mods. There are lots of potential gains in that engine due to bad intake/header design.

Toyota will cost you lots less in the long run.
