Toyota Oil Filters! Damn them!

Postby MCOjerry » Sat Jan 14, 2006 9:30 pm

Phreakd, I wantedt o know what/where the exhaust manifold was. I don't know a lot about cars. I just wanted to see if I could tell what filter was used, because I REALLY don't trust the dealership I went to. They are sneaky. (see my post in that forum). I just don't know a lot about cars, so I don't know where to look and I don't want them to use some cheap filter, when I pay a premium to have the dealership do it.

I own a condo, so I don't have anywhere to change my oil. I'm sure it's not hard, and I could do it if I knew where everything was, but I'm not allowed and I'm not going to just go to some parking lot.

So, I guess my question is...What/where is the exhast manifold :-) Thanks.

Filter Location: I think this already got answered. It is hard to see under the exhaust manifold so i doubt you could tell the CoO (Country of Origin) for that part.

Honestly, any Toyota branded filter is going to have passed strict quality and design requirements. I would say more so than the Puralators you'd get from AutoZone. You can trust that the dealership is not going to use cheapies on your car.

The other alternative: Change your own oil. My wife can do hers. This way you pick the oil and filter of your choice. Plus, it's a great way to start learning how to work on your car. This is usually the first thing you learn.

Huh? I have always changed my own oil, never paid for it. The jeep I built in my sig was a $1200 beat POS that needed a new front clip. I weld, fab, and can do just about anything. Hell, you might see me swap a 4.0 and tranny every once and awhile. The new solara is not a hobby, just a nice reliable new car. My hobby is, as stated, jeep restoration and modification to somthing that can handle a trail.

The dealership filter I got (... G1) WAS made by puralator for toyota. From what I have researched, it is true that not all toyota filters are equal. I was just trying to find out if someone knew a source for the japanese toyota (denso) filters, not the thailand "denso" knock offs. There are none, I guess. So TRD it is.

MCOJerry,

I recommend you buy the new haynes repair manual for your car. They are not as good as Factory service manual, but only cost $12 and can be found at any auto parts chain store (they just came out with them for gen2 solara). You will see labled pictures and step by step instuctions from tune-ups to engine changes. Read it, then read it again. Know where all your major components are, where all your fluids are located, and what maintenance parts you might need in the future. I'm not expecting you'll jump into a brake job, but the manual will expain how all these thing work together to get you from point A to B.

The exhaust manifold is located underneath the heatshield right in front of your engine and looks like a shinny piece of tin. The heatshield might have something like "hot" or "caution" stamped on it because it gets extremely hot. Exhaust gases are flowing through it, and eventually out your tailpipe. If you stick your hand (NOT when the engine is hot) underneath it, to the left of the part that goes straight down, you'll feel the end a cylinder about 2.5 inches in diameter and painted black. That is your oil filter.

Thanks jth. With that description, I will be able to find it and see if I can see anything. It sounds hidden, but I'll look anyway.

I always wanted to watch the service people worrk on my car, but they won't let you for insurance reasons. I guess I'm cynical, but I just don't trust them :-(

I'm sure thye wouldn't screw me, but you never know.

The exhaust manifold is where the exhaust gases exit the engine and enter the first catalytic converter. This is an old image for my car, but you can see the silver heat shielding of the front exhaust manifold. Look at the TRD logo on the engine. The manifold shield is below that. The Oil filter is located 5-6" below. It's accessed from the front of the engine.

Does anyone know how to get the filter out without dumping the contents down into the engine compartment? I've tried five times now all of which leaves my car smelling of Mobil1.

The old number for the v6 toyota oil filter was 08922-02011

This recently changed to this new# 90915-YZZG1

Also food for thought. The LEXUS equivalent is a 90915-YZZD1, it is probably the BETTER QUALITY filter of the bunch.

Hope this clears things up. I sell a ton of these every day since I work at a Toyota/Lexus/Scion dealership.

I buy my filters from toyotapartspeople.com. They are the same ones I got from the dealership at half the price. Everything I bought from them is much less than the dealer. The parts they send me are from a dealer in Washington state.

I use the Japanese Toyota oil filter in my 89 Supra. I'll have to give my parts guy a call and see if he can get the Japanese version for my Solara.

The Purolator Pure Ones Filters are damn good filters. I know if they use the regular Purolators than thats not good. They have done many test to prove it. it's what I use on my cars. I buy them at Pep Boys for 5.99 nearly half the price of Mobile 1 and K&N (said to be the top one s), not knocking on TRD but they are not an oil filter company so it would be wise to try and find out who makes them. All the test were perform at Bobistheoilguy .com , anything thing you need to know about oil is there. Big thing to look at with oil filters is the filtering quality and rate, and make sure that they have an anti drain back valve so they don't loose oil when the car is turned off. My sugestion is find the filter you like buy them and take them to you oil change place and have them use it.

as long as you have the JDM part number, dealer can order it for you. I always used JDM 5sfe filter and Bosch oil filter interchagely. I think i would trust in bosch too.

I would recommend using the K&N Oil Filter. This filter flow the best and cleans the oil very well. I noticed an increase of a few psi when using this filter, in my T/A, over the Mobil-1. Plus, it is the easiest filter to install/remove. It has a 1" nut on the end making it easy to use a 1" socket and ratchet. No more tearing your knuckles using a strap wrench. This are ~$10 and you can get them at Autozone or Advance Auto. The part number is HP1002 for the V6 guys.

Filter for the 2AZ-FE on 2nd Gen

Postby gnegroni » Sat May 27, 2006 3:36 pm

So, whats the best filter for the 4 banger? I didn't like the appearance of the smallist filter that the Dealer installed on the first oil change. Is there a TRD oil filter for my car?
