"range" error

"range" error

Postby mauleskyrocket » Mon Jan 02, 2006 3:09 pm

I am speaking of a new 06 solara cvtble. The car averages 24-25 mpg. Yet when I fill it --- it always says 284 miles for "range". Obviously this is incorrect. Since I know the mileage by odometer divided by gallons added---what is wrong? a defective computer or a software issue? Thx.

It says 284, but it counts down right?

I think if you read through all the posts about the range display, you'll find that most people find it very inaccurate.

It is funny that it always goes back to 284 though. Exactly how many times has it gone to 284? (and not just around 284)...

Mine greatly varies depending on how I drove the last few tanks... if I had done mostly city driving, the range, upon fillup would be around 280. if I had driven mostly freeway, the range goes up to 330-ish (that's not to say that that's the mileage I'm actually getting). The range display automatically corrects itself as you drive (ie, it doesn't necessarily go down 1 mile for every mile you drive).

Take it for what it is, that is, another warning for when you're low on gas.

Agreed... Mine never goes much above 300, however I usually get closer to 350-400 miles on a tank depending on my driving... I usually put on a good 25 miles when it says "0"...

2005 Toyota Solara V6 SLE

Postby dchev » Wed Jan 04, 2006 10:40 am

I can go 400 miles before my light comes on. My average MPG is 26miles per gallon now, and 26-29 miles per gallon during spring, summer, and fall.
However, I bought the car in Chicago, CarMax, and drove back to Charlotte, NC. So I might have broken into the engine for better milage?

I bought a new 06 convertible and posted the same question. My display does change at fill up, but does not reflect a mileage figure even close to what it should be. I'm not going to take the car in just for that, but if I have to take it in for a larger problem, I'm going to mention the range error. I've owned a number of cars that have this feature, and they were more accurate than the Toyota's display.

I have an 06, V6 convertible and when i fill up, the range goes to 384mi. I don't ever trust those though...it's just a guestimate. Your driving habits could make it VERY inaccurate.

If you're resetting your avg. mileage, then it has to guess. Any time it's guessing it goes conservative. You'll find that it may stay the same for a while or even go up once it has better figures on the mileage.

If you don't reset your avg. mileage, then it should show up fine when the tank is full.

Down, that's interesting. Reseting the AVG on my other cars did not affect the Range readings, but I'm going to try that the next time I fill up and see what happens. Thanks.

Just filled up today and did not reset my Avg MPG. Once I filled up, I scrolled to "range" which was showing 9. I started driving and after about .02 of a mile the display flashed to 351. That is the highest reading I've had thus far. This reading is much closer to an actual range. Once the range number of 351 appeared, I scrolled to AVG MPG and reset the AVG to 0. I then went back to range, and the reading of 351 was holding. Down's suggestion of not resetting the AVG MPG after the fill-up, seems to work!

And I noticed that when I topped off, I got 284 for an initial guess too. Must have a default mpg in the firmware to use in the calculation any time the mpg is less than some magic number number.
