The meter goes over the top of the window and extends down to both sides to measure. Of course some places may just do it visually with swatches of different tint.

not sure if this is helpful, but if you have an ophthalmologist (eye doc) that you go to and if they are chill you could get them to write you a letter stating that you need a dark window tint due to some eye problem.

Some cops keep one of those light meters in their cruisers and will do roadside tests on your windows if they are suspicious. The cops that are pricks will take a blade to your "un-legal" (un-legal isn't a word but illegal just sounds so wrong in this case) tint AND give you a citation. This happened to a friend of mine. It was pretty flippin funny, but not if it would have happened to me.

I went to a "shady" inspection station yesterday and asked one of the guys about getting an inspection done. He told me right off that I wouldn't pass because of my windows. He said he knew a couple people that had already been fined for passing cars w/ un-legal tint. He told me that he could be fined $100 just for telling me that I wouldn't pass the inspection. He said that what they're supposed to do is go ahead with the inspection, charge you, and then fail your inspection so you have to do it again. He even asked me if I worked for the DMV because the undercover guys are known to drive up in cars "like mine" with illegal tint and ask for inspections.

Why is NC spending my state tax dollars on crap like this? They should be using the money to increase the salaries of soldiers overseas stationed out of NC, not petty crap like un-legal tint.
