Life of OEM 17inch tires?

Life of OEM 17inch tires?

Postby slingshot » Fri Dec 23, 2005 2:35 pm

My four tires (215/55/17) have only 2/32" tread left on them (the tread is distance from top of Lincoln's head to penny edge). I've driven only 20,000 miles which seems pretty low to have so little tread left. The tires are the EL42's. What kind of mileage are others getting on these OEM tires? I'm getting the Avon M550 A/S same size as a replacement. I probably did a little more city than highway overall but should that make any difference in tire tread life?

Tires

Postby JMSinMaryland » Fri Dec 23, 2005 3:55 pm

Manufacturer's put the cheapest tires they can get away with. Don't expect an OEM tire to last more than 25k. Bottom line is their number 1 goal. Jon.

Trust me, the EL42s are not cheap tires regardless of how sh-t-y their performance is. Two of my tires are near needing replacing at 18,000 miles and since I do not believe in replacing individual tires, I will be replacing all four around 20,000 miles. The Turanza EL42s only have a tread rating of around 260 (can't remember the exact number). Even high performance tires often have a higher tread rating.
Moved on to better things...

At 20K miles mine are about done for as well. I put Blizzaks on for winter and will have the Turanza's put back on for the summer and try to get one last summer out of them, but they were no good on snow already.
When in doubt gas it out, brakes just slow you down.

also depends on how you drive.

aggressive driving cuts the life of any tire.

May I suggest that as replacements you get some Falkens.. They have the best tread life, and are not too pricey.

Falkens don't come in the same size as the OEM's. The diameter is different plus Tirerack doesn't have them. The Avon's are only $105/each and get really good ratings. The tread life is similar. The only better tread life is the Yokohama Avid's but their performance is a little less.

The Avons were hyped up by the manufacturers in their ramp up campaign. Not sure if they are really any good, but the reviews are spectacular from the people who work at Cooper Tyre.

Somebody mentioned they don't believe in replacing only one tire...right, but there's nothing wrong with replacing two instead of four.
