A/C Air Filter

A/C Air Filter

Postby MikeATL » Tue Nov 22, 2005 12:32 pm

Quick question:

Has anyone changed their A/C Air filter themselves? Can I buy the filter at napa or autozone, or do i have to get it at a dealership? i had it changed at my dealership and they charged me $100!! The air from the vents is starting to smell musty so I think its time for a new one.

I have no doubt my dealer is overpriced. I brought it in for some warranty work, told them to change the oil, rotate the tires, and all that jazz. Get the bill, I'm like, WTF??

O my! :o You guys gotta be joking right?

I paid $40 bux for mine and I changed it myself. It was so dirty. Now that I think about it, I think that's why my allergies was so bad...lol.

I'm looking to come up with some of my own if anyone is interested. If I do, it'll be bout $25 bux. If anyone is interested in this, please let me know so that I can start R&D-ing on this A/C cabin filter.

Where did you pick up your replacement air filter, mike?

I used to make my own for my xA. What I did was buy the thickest 3M filters they use for home A/C's (they are supposed to just slip in the A/C unit) at Lowe's or Home Depot. Then cut off the cardboard around the filter. Then take out the car filter, and cut the actual home filter into 4 to 6 (depends on the size of the car filter) filters of the same size and BAM! you got yourself 4 to 6 filters for about 10 to 15 bucks!
Yeah, I know, this is ghetto, but it works. And better than paying $100.

These are the ones I am talking about
http://www.3m.com/us/home_leisure/filtrete/
I think either the red one or the purple one is the thickest and best.

I got mine from Toyota dealership in NC. Town & Country Toyota. Ask for Billy and tell them Michael T. sent ya. He'll take care of you, always has for me.

Or you can do what kgzero1 said. Works just as well. Filter is a filter.

At least you DO have a filter; I don't even think the Gen1 has one (ironically there's instructions in the Haynes, but I think it's for the IS300 or Avalon).

I bought two because the f'in mice got into my system. That filter was soooo nasty! Paid $45/ea I think. I'll go ghetto next time.
Tip: The filter's in a little plastic tray. Don't lose the tray! Guys in MD took mine out and trashed the tray with the filter. Cost me way too much to buy that stupid little cage!

$25? Are you sure you're not thinking about the engine's air filter (in engine compartment) instead of the air conditioning filter (hidden behind glovebox)?

^^^Exactly, I was thinking the same thing. Those lube express places don't normally replace a/c cabin filter; they normally replace your air filter.^^^
