I don't have TCS, but I heard it supplements your ability to avoid accidents (or prevent you from spinning out of control on some turns) by controlling wheels individually -- next best thing next to AWD.

Two separate systems. One is traction control which controls forward wheel slip under acceleration. The other is Vehicle Stability Control and it helps prevent skids. Comparing it to AWD is a real stretch. AWD increases traction while VSC helps control the car within the available traction. AWD cannot help control the car and prevent skids without driver input. VSC does within the limits of the car and available traction. VSC can brake individual wheels and cut throttle but it cannot PROVIDE power to individual wheels.

The "TCS OFF" button turns off only the forward motion traction control system. If your car has VSC, it is ALWAYS on.

They say "option" but in the 04's it was the kind of an option that the factory put in every car off the line I think.

Depends on the region and what the dealers ordered. When I bought my car, it was the only one in the southeast U.S. that had the side airbags and VSC options.

Most drivers need the assistance of stability control. I'm glad you cannot turn it off in most cars equipped with it.

GEN 2 SLE's mostly have VSC because many dealers include it. Not since the introduction of ABS has a safety advancement added such a high level of driving security. When used with ABS and traction control, stability control systems significantly increase a driver's chances of recovering from potentially dangerous situations.

Here's more you can read about it:

I agree with you. I never turn trac off and am glad that VSC can't be turned off. VSC has helped me recover from some slippery turns quite a few times. I am definately glad that my car has it. (Wisconsin region)
