I can sympathize....I live in Syracuse, NY. In our size the offerings are limited. After a lot of research, I just bought Bridgestone Blizzak WS50 studless winter/ice. I haven't seen anything availabe that can be studded. The WS50's have the best ratig for winter studless tires in our size. I've used them in other sizes and was more than pleased.

buy 15 inch steelies and go for studded tires on those. This way, keep your 17's for summer driving.

^^^^ couldnt agree with you more... its a good idea to go that way. that way you dont mess up your 17" rims if you should happen to slide into and embankment..

Tried to go 16" to get narrower tread width, but NO GO!
Problem is with fit over the brakes/rotors. On my 06, 16" won't fit, so stuck with 17". Don't know if 04 is same situation.

This is the way to go. I believe Tire rack has steel wheels as part of a winter package.

Word of caution: They get these from the factories in VERY limited quantities. You can expect them to be completely out of stock within weeks of the first snow storm. Don't wait.

When you check TireRack.com, look up winter tire and wheel packages for the Camry LE. You won't get steel wheels in 16" or 17", so they won't show up under the Solara. It'll probably come up with a 205/65/15 tire with a diameter of 25.6". This should be close enough to the factory diameter of you factory 215/55/17's. You could also go with a thinner tire if you have a lot of deep snow. Steel wheels run about $29 each. Awesome buy. Winter tires, $58 - $150 depending on what you want.

Best of luck, let us know what you get.

Do you know if this will work? Spoke with Tirerack about my '06 and they said nothing smaller than 17" will fit. Confirmed at local dealer ship, also. Did the brake diameters change for '06 and that is why?

Does anybody know the answer to this question? Will a 15" or 16" fit on my 04?

Something tells me that you have a SLE or a SE with the 17"ers. How big are your rotors front and back? This will determine you clearance condition with your rims: You will need to measure the height of the caliper + the size of your rotors (DIA). If for some event you find the specs to the rotor size matching the base solara to the SLE, your odd will be good where the 16" will get the job done. Good luck Bro.

By the way Just like PhreakdOut say, the seasons about to end on snow tire availabilty.

However, the link below is a studless tire that will fit your 17"s

Rather than having another set of tires, what about using Spikes Spiders (this has metal studs and probably still cost less than a set of wheels)?

FYI. I normally pass a chain control area a few times a year; and, I've been happy w/ my Super Z SC135 (no clearance issue so far). BTW, I never experience the Spikes Spiders eventhough I believe spikes spider give better clearance. When deciding getting the winter traction, I chose the Super Z mainly because of the cost reason.

Matt search townfair tire's winter wheel/tire packages. I gotten 15 inch package for 450. They might have it for you too.. Be sure to print the deal out when you bring it to the shop though

But you drive a Gen1, correct. So the 15 might be okay. Direct from the mouth of Toyota, 2006 17" OEM, "you cannot use 16" wheels because they will not clear..." Conversation with Tirerack states same. Even went one further and talked with Bridgestone dealership...they made several calls and said, "NOPE", you can't use 16" wheels. So, I have the 17" Blizzaks and they have performed flawlessly in the snow we've gotten so far. Great traction and handling. They are noisy, however on dry pavement.

The thing is I don't have the 17" stockies, I got the car with 18"s and they're awful in the snow. I bought some snow tires on Ebay and I'll just use the 18's I got the car with. It was pretty close to the cost of a set of steelies and tires. Just 3 inches of snow last night and I've already had it. I hate winter so much, and there's more snow to come tomorrow night. :( At least the Pats got a win tonight, it's about the only good thing to come out of December so far around here.

Massachusetts is definitely not the place for summer tires in the winter. You need at least great all-seasons or dedicated snow tires.
