I have the same thing- it has done it since it has had 400 miles on it, now at 9600 miles after 1 year to the day of ownership. I have taken it in for repair and they "cant feel anything". I'm not sure what it is, just that my car is a giant P.O.S! I feel it when I'm turning corners- its a catching type feel in the steering wheel. I'd love to know what it is too.

Does the pulse or "tap" change in either amplitude or frequency with increasing speed?

I have 45k on mine (04 SLE V6), around 20K my dealership replaced my entire "rack steering assembly" the part was around $1000 plus labor, covered under warranty. This seemed to help but the problem has returned and seems to be getting worse. I've tried to duplicate the problem for the dealer but it doesn't always occur. If I rack the steering to one side, straighten it out then accelerate or brake, then 50% the problem will surface. No idea what the problem is how to address it with the dealer. I assume it's related to the steering and not the drivetrain and should be covered under the 60K warrant.

My steering felt loose and made a clanking noise when I would turn the wheel to the right. Had the dealer look at it and they determined it was a bad u-joint (I think) and it was replaced. Problem gone and the steering is nice and tight again. It started out as a loose feeling when turning the wheel to the right, then a slight clank developed, and it eventually turned into a nearly constant clank whenever the wheel was turned. Seems to be a fairly common complaint with Camrys, ES300/330s, and Solaras.

I have basically early symptoms of the same problem you describe with 13K on my Solara. I'm waiting for the problem to become more noticable before I take it to the dealer for repairs. If I brought it to them now they would more than likely give it back to me with nothing fixed stating "could not duplicate problem".

Steering Noise/Feel

Postby GregJK » Thu Oct 20, 2005 8:06 pm

I had my third steering rack replaced under warranty about 1 month ago. The first replacement was fine for about 8 months, the 2nd only lasted for about 2 weeks. According to my dealer, who has always worked very well with me in resolving issues, there was a change to the rack assembly or fittings.

Good luck with resolving your issue.

My car is in the shop 2day. Hey GregJK, I was wondering how your steering assembly is holding up after the third replacement?

Do you know if the techs used the Lexus ES300/330 TSB ST001-05 APR 05 Steering - Clunk/Pop/Knock Noise Turning to help resolve your issue?

I just got word that they are gonna replace the rack and pinion assembly. *sob* Da Lara is going in for major surgery *sob*. The good ting is that she's still under warranty ($free.99 is always a winner in my book). My svc advisor stated that they hooked up the chassis monitor (i'm thinking its like a stethoscope or someting) to establish where the sound is coming from. Looks like they came up with nada. Hopefully I'll have the same success as TW85 has had. We'll see what happens in a few days.

I'm not sure. It did not take the mechanic and service manager long to zero in on the part causing the noise. It has only been about five weeks since the repair but so far, so good.

I seemed to be getting the same problem a couple of days ago when the weather warmed up; however, I'm going to give it a week or so to see if it persists.

I got my car back yesterday and looks like my wheels are back to normal. The report stated that the steering gear had some scoring on it. They replaced the steering gear and now its like brand new. Hopefully it won't happen again.

I decided not to wait anymore and took my car into Toyota service yesterday to have them fix my steering problem as I plan on doing a lot of driving over the next 2 months and didn’t want to risk any type of “catastrophic steering failure”.

I told the service person that I hear (usually 2 or 3) low-pitched “thumps” accompanied by a corresponding “tapping” felt in the steering wheel whenever I make a turn (especially if accompanied with braking or acceleration), as well as sometimes with slow, straight-line acceleration or braking (like when I’m in “stop and go” traffic).

The diagnosis was a defective intermediate shaft in the steering column. Unfortunately, this is not a new problem for me. My ‘01 Olds Aurora V8 went through 2 intermediate shafts by 30K miles. The symptoms of this problem in my Aurora were exactly the same as I’m now having in my Solara (at 13K miles).

Anyway, Toyota had to order a new intermediate shaft and they're supposed to have it in later today.

P.S. It took Toyota about 4 hours to install the part; no charge, fully covered by warranty. The problem seems to be totally fixed now. :D
