HELP please I cant get my sway bar off

HELP please I cant get my sway bar off

Postby Solorange » Fri Oct 14, 2005 2:39 pm

I cant break the bolt loose with the hex key center in it on the rod connecting from the strut to the sway bar. I tried air tools, allen keys, everything. I got it to spin but I cant break the nut off the hex key bolt. And I actually striped the hex key bolt too. Now I have no clue how to get it off. Do you guys know what I can do.

After you've tried and tried and TRIED, and it ends up stripped.... bring it out to some hole-in-the-wall shop and im sure they'd get it out for you cheap... maybe even free!! Its like a testoterone test for them... "oh I can do it!! nooo probleeeem!" LOL

but yeah since you have a 99, its possible thats its stuck in there... have you tried to WD-40 it???

Yeah after Drilling it out. I found out that that bolt is part of the connecting rod. So now i have to buy new connecting rods. This is the easiest job that turns into a nightmare. I replace my own struts and springs and it was easier. This sway bar better be worth new connecting rods. Oh well!! Time to :drinking:

I packed the new connecting rod hex holes with a heavy grease to try to prevent that from happening again.
Same thing happened to me on my Gen3.
It definately is worth the effort. :drinking:

I just called the dealership and they want 89 dollars for each rod. This easy cheap mod just turned into a expensive one.

Well I got it in. Man I think that was harder to do that than installing my struts and springs. I replace both the sway bar links a 190 bucks later. Just cut the old ones off with a cutoff wheel. Then I had problems getting the new sway bar in trying to work around the exhaust pipe and the heat sheild. So I ended up taking out the heat sheld. Those bolts broke so I replace those. Then I decided to drop the muffler down a bit. Once I did all that I got it in. Unfortunatly I scratch the sway bar up a lot trying to get it in there. So Then I painted it so it wont rust once i got it in place. Well at least the scratches i could see. And I did manage not to get a single drop of paint on the undercarrage not that is matters. I wrapped everthing in surrand wrap to keep the paint off. But hey now its done and everytime i do this it reminds me why i decided to go to engineering school instead of mechanic school. Time to get my football and :drinking: on!
