Broken rearview mirror

Broken rearview mirror

Postby chaosmarine32 » Mon Oct 10, 2005 4:01 pm

Today as i was driving, my rearview mirror broke in half (the part that connects it to the part glued to the window. Im sure its from adjusting it too much cause it would always get knocked around when my subs would hit. I was thinking about superglueing it, but wouldnt that make it hard to adjust and prone to breaking again? Its the auto-dimmer/compass mirror so getting a cheap replacement isnt an option. Anyone have any suggestions? thanks

How about just simply reducing the volume or bass level to prevent too much vibration?

Because that would defeat the purpose of spending $2000 on a pair of subs and an amp ya know?

Come on Slingshot... that's no fun!!!

Chaos, if it's just the base that slides over the portion over the window, good quality model glue or super glue would probably be your best bet... Either that, or there may be a replacement part for it (I'd need to look at mine to see what it looked like). Is it possible for you to post a pic of it so we can get a better idea of what's going on?

Believe it or not, the amount of glue on the mirror is intentional. In a collision, the mirror is designed to break loose should a person's face strike it. As you mentioned, the subs are causing enough vibration that this breaks free.

Superglue would not be a fun alternative should you ever need to replace the windshield. I'd wage someone has run into this before and has a strong double sided tape just for this solution.

Check with high end stereo install shops or web forums. You'll want something a little stronger, but just short of permenant.

Phreakd, I am under the impression that he is speaking of the piece that slides onto the piece glued onto the windshield, and not the windshield mount itself. Not sure though...

If it IS the actual mounting piece for the windshield, than Phreakd is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!! I dunno why you would have that problem though... I have the auto-dimming rear-view as well, and I'm regularly pushing around 140db (up to around 145 when I'm playin around), and I have not had any problems... Sometimes, however, a good, hot day can weaken the glue...

That's why we need some pics!!

Ah, good point. I was under the impression the whole assembly came off the glass. My bad, I read the post too fast. Chaosmarine said in broke in half.

It sounds like the Toyota parts manager will be seeing you soon. :-)
