Smacked in the Rear

Smacked in the Rear

Postby joebxr » Sun Oct 09, 2005 5:41 am

Well, I've been enjoying the car for just over 2 months, and I got rear-ended and sandwiched yesterday. We were all stopped in traffice except for the idiot driving a S-10 coming up behind me. He hit me hard enough to buckle rear quater panel, buckle interior trim panel, and crumple rear bumper and trunk, and my seat back actually reclined an additional position. Then I smacked forward into a Subaru, so front bumber is not in great shape either. With all that, I got away with a sire neck and lower back...thank you Toyota for designing a great car.

Now I only need to find out if they will repair it. Although there appears to be a lot of damage, I don't think it will be totalled. I already miss my ride!

PS - Michael's grills top and bottom, survived without damage!!!!

I am glad you appear to be doing well. Have that neck checked out completely by a chiropractor. Problems can show up after a settlement.

Good luck with the insurance and claims adjustment. Unfortunately, it will never properly compensate you for your troubles. Post up pics sometime.

God speed for a quick recovery.

I hope your medical problems are fixed soon. That guy must have been going at a good speed to cause so much damage. Sorry to hear about the accident but it was something unavoidable. I've been in a couple close calls with that scenario.

Thanks for the good wishes...much appreciated. Hopefully it's just soreness and nothing permanent. Couldn't find anything wrong in emergency room yesterday, but need to go to my Dr now and have him take a look.

Went to where car was towed and shot a few pics through fence. Doesn't look as bad as it really is. I hope all the extra damage doesn't amount to much, but we'll see what insurance and body shop says.

Hope link works:

Jusr returned from best body shop in town. Initial estimate is $5,400. They will be taking car apart tomorrow to review any further damage, then will put on frame machine to do laser check to see if anything else is out of whack that can't be seen visually. Front bumper is just going to be stripped, primed and repainted, unless they find further damage they didn't anticipate. Parts are on order for know replacement items. Should have car back in 2-1/2 weeks if no surprises.

I'm so sorry to hear of this bad news bro. I know exactly what you're going thru, the same thing happened to my gurl's 03 altima a year and a half ago. Luckily she was fine. Damages came up to $8000, the car is good as new now, it took about 2-3 weeks to finally get it back to top notch. You can't even tell now.

You're right about the insurance not totalling the car though. I'm glad to hear you walked a way with just a sore neck.

Glad to hear that the upper and lower grilles survived. If there's anything I can do, please let me know.

Best wishes to you in getting this taken care of. :(

Cost UPDATE

Postby joebxr » Tue Oct 11, 2005 2:04 pm

Just rec'd call from Insurance agent who was at Body Shop. Repair cost is now at $6,543.68

They haven't laser checked the frame yet, but vehicle is apart enough they couldn't see any visible indicatins of frame damage other than at rear where impact was. Hoepfully there is nothing more to repair...we'll see. My insurance agent is going to have their guy go look at the vehicle, too, just to look out for my interests.

I'll bet your insurance agent's "guy" is looking out for the insurance company's interests, not yours.

The other guy's insurance is paying the bill. My agent is going to check things out for me to make sure the other guy's insurance is covering everything that needs to be done and that they are using genuine Toyota new parts as I directed and not dickering with the body shop for cheaper parts, etc.

Everything came out really good...body shop did great job. Total cost was $6,750. But they never discovered that my seat was a little messed up from the impact. Everytime I brake the seat back has some forward/backward motion that wasn't there before. Insurance guy took a look and had it appraised by Toyota. Dealer said seat needs to be replaced because there are no replaceable parts....so now add 1 heated seat at $3,900 to the bill.
