Why don't you put the seats down half way, then pull them off. That should work.

No, they cannot be removed. They are part of the rollover system.

Headrests

Thanks for the reply
Its just that no one sits back there and it blocks your view through the rear view mirror

Yeah, I know. This was one of the major initial complaints about the convertible. Toyota moved the headrests a little bit toward the sides in 2005, but not by much, so the problem's still there. Astro posted some pictures a while back while he was working on junest's ride (I believe he was changing the springs), so you may want to do some searching in the Gen2 Aftermarket forum.

You should take a look a Junest's webpage. (Junest, I hope you don't mind my posting a pic from it.)

She's got an excellent pic of the headrest's roll bars.

It would be quite a job to remove them.

I'm still considering getting an SUV-type backup camera for the rear although that wouldn't solve the "C" pillar visibility issues.

Nice to know that there's some rollover protection in the convertibles.

This photo actually gave me an idea...

Hmmm... now if one were to use a sawzall and cut off those bars and have some new ones fab'd and chromed and re-welded onto the frame - I wonder what that might look like? ;)

Filling the leather gap might be more of a challenge with pipes still poking out. I can say that time and laziness will result in getting used to the look. (for the most part)

Replacement Bars

Here's what I kinda envisioned:

Maybe even try it in black anodized to match the wind screen...
