Navi calibration upset by 20's?

Navi calibration upset by 20's?

Postby CJSblackbeauty » Sat Sep 17, 2005 4:06 pm

I just put 20's on my 2006 V6 SLE convertible and a few hours later my navigation freaked out!! Has anyone had an issue with larger aftermarket wheels throwing off their navi calibration? My car's location just doesn't register anymore... I read something in the manual about manually calibrating it when you change tires and I did that already, with no change.

I've tried a couple of dealers today and so far everyone is clueless. One thought it might be the tint on the windows...the nav didn't work even when I put the top down though and besides, I've been driving around with the tint for a few days with no problems, so I don't think it's that.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Try resetting the battery yet?

While I don't know for sure, I have to believe that the NAV unit is GPS-based and wheels won't make a bit of difference.

Is it possible when the windows were tinted, the antenna connection was somehow interrupted?

Not having a NAV unit myself (a built-in one, anyway), these are just guesses. Sorry I can't offer you anything more concrete.

Thanks for your advice. I haven't tried resetting the battery yet, but that's a thought. I don't think it is the tint, though, because it doesn't work when the convertible top is down...can't get a more unobstructed view of the sky than that! :D

I have no idea how the GPS antenna is attached to the NAV unit, but my question was more along the lines of if they removed the antenna and then improperly reattached it.

Hmmm... you're definitely asking a question beyond my level of comprehension, but I drove around with the tint for a few days before I got my wheels and the nav was fine. Only two additonal things have occurred since the tint was installed...I got XM radio installed and then the 20' wheels...

Im curious....if the navigation is GPS based...do they charge you montly/yearly for tracking your car? I know its seems like a dumb question, but its been on my mind..

There's no fee for getting the satellite signal (they're broadcast for free). However, at least in case of my Magellan GPS system, you're charged if you want to upgrade your maps to the latest example. New maps come out about every year or two.

The XM installation is probably the culprit since it is integrated with the NAV unit. (I'm assuming you have the OEM unit installed)

Aftermarket portable NAV units only get movement data from GPS. Builtin NAV units use both GPS signals and data from your car itself. For instance, if you lose your GPS signal when driving (like in a tunnel), you see the builtin NAV still moving your position because it is then depending on your odometer to register movement and pretty accurately plotting your movement. If you get new tires that are of a different diameter than the stock tires, the odometer and speedometer readings will be off. Perhaps that messed up the NAV but I would think that it would just be inaccurate in distance you traveled due to the wrong diameter tires (one full rotation of the new tire would be a longer linear distance on the road than the stock tire would do). I don't understand why the NAV would just go crazy. THe NAV system is made by Denso in Japan. Perhaps a NAV website could help. I'd also check the Sienna, Lexus, or Prius forum websites online since those cars also have the same NAV and someone there might have had the same thing happen to them after getting larger tires.

I'd concur with the idea of the XM install being an excellent starting point.

Yes, I do have the OEM nav. I made an appt. for service on Monday to see if the XM install and/or the wheels might be contributing to the problem. I never see the "GPS" symbol on my nav, though, so I wonder if its even registering?

Whoa, no GPS signal anytime? Sounds like a loose connection between the NAV and the GPS antenna under the dash.

The tint shouldn't have anything to do with it. I had an aftermarket gps system in mine and the navi worked great.

Good luck with getting this resolved.

You mention XM and wheels. No logical reason the wheels would upset the nav, them messing with your stereo adding XM is a logical reason. Jon.
