3.5L V6 swap from a new Avalon... dealer input wanted

3.5L V6 swap from a new Avalon... dealer input wanted

Postby mmcdonald » Fri Sep 09, 2005 11:11 am

Okay, I know there are a lot of posters here who work at Toyota dealerships. And I know this is a freaky question (so it means someone must have already posted it seeing as how you're all freaks!) :D Okay, me too.

Would it be possible to swap the 3.5L V6 in the Avalon into my ride? I would do the engine and tranny, and any of the transaxle components that are needed.

Having done engine swaps in the old days (funnest was a 327/275 Chevy V8 from a 1966 Impala SS into a 326 1967 Pontiac LeMans. Boy did that scare the boy racers) I am not put off by having this sort of thing done, if it is plausible.

I crave torque steer! :drinking:

Before you drive yourself crazy over the next year trying to get it to work, the Gen2.5 WILL get the 3.5L from the 770N Avalon. This is due out next fall '06, but might possibly get moved forward.

In general , engine swaps are extremely difficult nowadays. The V-8 Chevy's of the past had two tranny variants and no ECU to deal with. I'm working on an '88 300ZX SS Turbo in which I'm swapping the VG30DET with a VQ35 engine and tranny. (Nightmare upon nightmare.) And I haven't gotten up to fine tuning the electronics. (Standalone engine management system, etc.) Run like hell from swaps unless you really have no other option.

Geez, I hate to kill this one so soon, but if the 2.5 is coming out with the 3.5, then that is a no brainer. I would spend less on the pay-off financing than the swap.

Any more details on the 3.5 in the next gen? Is it detuned? The 3.5 already looks eerily similar to the 3.3 on paper.

3.3L 225 hp V6
Horsepower 225 @ 5600 RPM
Torque (lb-ft) 240 @ 3600 RPM
Valves/Valve Configuration 24/DOHC
Displacement (cc) 3311
Bore X Stroke (in.) 3.62 X 3.27
Compression Ratio 10.8:1
Fuel Type/System Gas/SEFI

3.5L 280 hp V6
Horsepower 280 @ 6200 RPM
Torque (lb-ft) 260 @ 4700 RPM
Valves/Valve Configuration 24/DOHC
Displacement (cc) 3456
Bore X Stroke (in.) 3.70 X 3.27
Compression Ratio 10.8:1
Fuel Type/System Gas/EFI

It looks like a bored out 3.3, but then I heard it was a destroked 4.0.

take the IS350's engine

Postby angelo » Mon Sep 12, 2005 9:41 am

If you wanna spend the money (a lot of them since IS is rwd) just get the 3.5l from the new IS350. It has 306 hp (certified by the new SAE ratings) and according to the Car and Driver's October issue does 0-60 in 5.1s and a quarter in upper 13s @104mph.
The certified rating for Avalon's engine is just 268hp, so you'll get about 40 hp more ;-).

Not to highjack the thread or anything, but any word on pricing for the new IS?

I don't believe in motor swaps. Your 3mz is more than enough to haul donkey, plus, your car is so new.

Actually the specs for the 3.5l V6 from Avalon (based on the new certified SAE ratings):

3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve Dual VVT-i V6
268 hp @ 6200 rpm
248 lb.-ft. @ 4700 rpm

There is no firm proof yet that the Gen 2.5 Solara will have the 3.5l engine from the Avalon. Phreakdout himself in another thread just recently recanted that story. So don't bet on it yet.
