HELP...I think I broke something!

HELP...I think I broke something!

Postby stacyd » Thu Aug 25, 2005 6:13 am

Ok, so I decided to rotate my tires last weekend, and me and all my glorious stupidity rolled my car off the jack with the front passenger side wheel off. Of course, it came crashing down on the rotor, but surprisingly, the rotor was fine. The only noticeable thing that happened was that the backing plate behind the rotor was all bent out of shape, but I took it to my bro-in-law's dad's shop and they said all was good. Nothing to worry about. But since yesterday, I started hearing this noise when going over bumps (even tiny ones)...and it almost sounds like a popping noise or something bouncing around. This seems to be coming from the front drivers side. Could I have broken something in the suspension on that side from the car falling off the jack on the other side? I am not too familiar with suspensions, but I would imagine that is where the noise is coming from.
Does anyone know if there is some other damage I should be looking for? My first instinct was the rotor and the brakes, now I'm starting to wonder if I've over-looked something else. Sorry for the long post, I'm just looking for some help. Thanks!

I wish I could explain it better. I don't have any way to get a sound clip. The weird thing is, i feel like i've heard that noise before in a different car, i am just trying to think of which one, or whose car. I am thinking maybe the strut is blown or a bushing, but i don't know enough about either to know what to look for. I just don't know how the car rolling off the jack at a height only high enough to take the tire off could blow a strut on the other side of the car. I suppose it could be totally unrelated and i am hearing this now because i have been listening for noises to make sure everything is ok. ARGH. I'll probably just take it to the dealer and leave out the part about what happened to it and see if they find anything. But if anyone has suggestions on how to test where the noise is coming from, please let me know!

Keep in mind that the source of the sound can be deceiving. You may think that you hear it from the left side, when in fact the sound may come from the right side, depending on how the sound bounces around. It's quite common with rattles and sqeaks. I'm not saying this is the case here, simply that it might be.

Its your bearing.. If its a clicking or tapping sound that you hear when your driving especially when the road is uneven then its your bearing. You can really hear it when your braking because its shaking back and forth. Few solaras that I know of have issues with their bearings. I own two solaras and both are having the same issues with bearings.
Thats just my guess. The struts and everything else are built to be tough. I just dont think our solara bearings are strong enough witht he weight we have. Especailly when its small little bearings being drop onto the floor with a 900+ lb area of the car.
