Average MPG & MPG

Average MPG & MPG

Postby dvdchris45 » Sun Mar 20, 2005 12:12 am

Hey folks, thought I'd start this post to see what everyone else averages on their MPG and MPH. My numbers are anything but desirable:

17.7 MPG with an average speed of 20 MPH. I dont understand how that works, its not like I gun it to 60 mph every chance I get

You must do some major traffic as a rule. You get about 21 when your average goes up to a reasonable 30-40. On all highway you can get 29. Lots of posts about mileage if you search around.

hm...26.4 mpg at 39.5 mph...

but whenever I do hand calculations at the pump, it's usually around 20-22 mpg.

I did 100 miles gunning and got 19mpg, then 100 miles puss drivin' and got 24.5 mpg. That's on the guage which is traditionally +2 from reality. If you're worried, back it up with a manual calc. your gauge may have a bad feed from a sensor or you may actually be getting that mileage. Either way, doesn't sound good.

Remember, if you're stopped at a light or in traffic, your MPG is zero. Also, if you let someone sit in your car while you run an errand, that's zero MPG as well.

Thus, you may not be seeing mileage reflective of what you get when you're actually driving.

mileage depends on fuel grade also. I am getting considerably better mileage with premium in my V6.

I get about 27 mpg when there is heavy traffic, and about 31 mpg when there is little traffic.

I have had avg 37.3 mpg on a trip from Fairfax, VA to Annapolis, MD.

Took my first long distance road trip today and got 35.0 MPG AVG on the dash gauge when I pulled back into the driveway. Not bad with two (not-so-slim) passengers and a 3-drawer bedside table in the trunk. Speed was between 60 and 70. So far I'm getting 30.7 MPG in stop/go traffic.

Not mileage related but: I learned today that you can fit a twin-sized bed frame (dismantled) in the Solara with one of the rear seats down -- with almost no intrusion into the front seat area. It helped that it had no headboard.

Try doing THAT with an Eclipse.

Just an idea about this... haven't really tried looking at the manual...

It dawned on me that maybe we aren't supposed to reset the mpg and mph at every fillup?

As I and others have seen, the onboard computer seems to overestimate by approximately 2 mpg (versus hand calculations)... maybe it will correct itself across many tanks?

I have been reseting everything religiously, but I think for the next few fillups, I'll leave the mpg/mph while only resetting the trip meter.
