Fuel Range Doesn't Reflect Added Gas

Fuel Range Doesn't Reflect Added Gas

Before I take my '05 SLE in for service, I was wondering if perhaps someone else on the board had encountered this same problem.

I filled up my car yesterday (fuel gauge moved up to "F" position) but the range shown on the display stayed the same. I thought that's odd but figured the computer just needed time to recalculate. This morning when I drove to work, same range, albeit decreasing. Driving home, same story.

Before I take her in for warranty work, any ideas for a simple solution?

Well, that's certainly what I did. I'll let the fuel level drop and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion!

It depends on what kind of gas milage you've been getting, When I first got my car with a full tank of gas from the dealer My range was in the high 300's. but I do mostly city driving so the last time I filled it up the car only estimated that I was going to get about 250~ miles from the tank. I was driving all highway at that point so the dash went down in miles very slowly until it started to get where it should have been then it has been accurate.

but your car's sending unit might be bad, if thats the case you'll be without it for a day or two

High 300s?

Postby FLUXEMAG » Tue Aug 09, 2005 1:51 pm

Wow, I can't believe anyone can get high 300's. Even with the 4cyl. My v6 never goes above 278. I consistently drive it faster than the traffic around me. My avg using 91 is 19.4mpg.

The only time I didn't give her the full fill, it read zero on 5 gallons of gas until I filled it. There must be a threshhold for the meter to reset due to the fuel sloshing around. My guess is half tank.

Dude I don't know what to tell you but my car had a range set on it on the day of delivery for 370-something, my buddy was the salesman, he topped off the tank a few clicks from where it stopped initially, and used 93 octane, I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it but I didn't put gas in it for a week

Last week was the first time I didn't fill the tank completely...low on $ that day :) . Before adding fuel I checked what the reamining range was. After adding fuel I checked the range again and it did recalculate. Maybe this could be a way to check if your system is funtioning correctly.

The ECM must be tracking mileage trending based on accleration characteristic averages mapping to fuel comsumption. That way when fuel is added it calculates amount fuel added, compares it to mileage/acceleration trending and comes up with a range guestimation.

Thoughts?
