BestBuy Shopping Spree- What Car Audio to Get??

Postby TRAFFICBLOWS » Sun Mar 20, 2005 1:38 pm

I know someone at BestBuy that gets 5% over manufacturer price as employee discount and only $50 installation (I'd install myself but if it's so cheap why not). So I was going to upgrade my '99 JBL system with parts from there, thinking it would be the cheapest way to go. How is
this BestBuy (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=cat03064&type=category) setup:

Amp:
Rockford P4004 (50W RMS) x 4 @ 4 Ohm
-or-
Rockford P4002 (75W RMS) x 2 @ 4 Ohm (and use H/U for 2nd set of speakers- don't want 2 amps in car right now)

6.5":
Rockford P162S 120W (60 RMS) 2-way

6"x9":
Pioneer TS-A6981R 420W Peak (80W RMS) 4-way
-or-
Alpine SPR-69LP 275W Peak (55W RMS) 2-way
-or-
Sony XS-V6941H 400W Peak (100W RMS) 4-way

Sub:
I have a POS 70W self-powered mono Alpine sub... enough for now. May upgrade later.

H/U:
Any suggestions from BestBuy stock? I don't know if I can part with a double-DIN so I might be forced to go without a discount for an Eclipse AVN or Kenwood DDX. Are 1-DIN a pain in the @$$ to work when you're driving... I dunno if I could switch??

Thanks!!

I would see if they could order you some Alpine spx-177r(type-x) it shows they only stock the type-r.

For the headunit's I'd get the best Pioneer or Alpine you can afford.

Not much else I'd get from there.

Yeh, they dont have much of a selection. Probably gonna have to look into the special order.

On the Alpine SPX-177R, the specs say the "System" is 70W/300W (RMS/Peak), but the "Drivers" are listed as 40W RMS- what should I match the amp to: 70W or 40W?

They can handle more power than that. I'd run anywhere from 85-120 watts rms.

Do you have a sub amp yet too? If not check out the DLS A5. You can run the front components off the 85 watts RMS X 2, and 300,500, or 700 watts RMS depending on what ohm load is used(4,2,1)

http://www.dls.se/english/fstark/a5n.htm

These sell for around 475 online, but retail is alot higher.

If you want to spend almost half that you can get a JBL GTO755.6

Yeah, working at Best Buy had its advantages. I got 1/2 off ALL mobile audio stuff. I have a $1500 system for $750!!! (2 900w Rockford Fosgate speakers, 2100w RF amp, 1 Farad RF cap, Pioneer stereo) It killed my little 88 Corolla but its great in my 00 solara! Pioneer makes excellent stereo systems. They look good too. I never had a problem with Pioneer. The speakers set off alarms from parked cars so you know its loud! Amp had a problem but I sent it back and they fixed it no problem. Just a few ideas for a pumping system!

WHen you plan to upgrade the sub, look into REAudio (Resonant Engineering) RE SE subs. They are clean, cheap and a well kept secret! You can try the XXX or MT if you're crazy.

why not install yourself? ill tell you why. guys at places like best buy generally do not do that great of a job

no disrespect to best buy employees but if you know what you are doing you will take much better care of your own care than a best buy install "kid"

also these installer are generally not that knowledgable. they can get it done and have all the parts they need but believe me i would never let anyone install in my car unless i absolutley had to

my opinion anyway..and as always there are exeptions to the rule

I think they have Pioneer deh-p8mp decks there, which I would recommend. or deh-p80mp or deh-p770mp (pretty much the same deck under a different model #). If they have a deh-p860mp and you have the $$ i'd definitely go for that.
Nascar would be a sport if half the cars were driving the other direction.

Wow- recent interest in this thread! Yeah at the time I had stopped looking at BestBuy for two reasons: 1) my friend quit so the hookup went with him and 2) they didn't have a great selection 4 months ago.

I just looked at the website again, and they have the Kenwood DDX7017 Double-Din, 6.5" screen, 5V pre-outs, & crossovers for $1299. If they had that 4 months ago I def would have chosen it. Man, they also have a 24-bit DAC Alpine, too.
