Ragtops and Rear Headrests

Ragtops and Rear Headrests

Postby yar02169 » Mon Jul 11, 2005 7:46 am

I really dislike the amount of interference the rear headrests cause when driving with the roof up. The two headrests block half the view out of the rear window. Has anyone attempted removing the headrests, and if so, what could be used to cover the mounting bracket on the rear seat? I also think that with the wind-deflector installed, the lines would be much smoother without the headrests when the top is down.

headrests

I would also love to remove the headrests, but I believe this concept was already discussed. I think the headrests are directly welded onto the frame somehow, and would need to be cut off...I am not that eager to remove the headrests. Hopefully a SG has a solution.

There's not much your gonna be able to do. You don't want to cut those down, they are your roll bars. If you flip, without those say goodbye! They do block a lot of the view, but I'd rather have it there for safety reasons.

PLEASE tell me that's not a Solara!!! The shape seems wrong but all ripped out, who knows. That's not what you imagine when you pop off the back cover.

I want them off too. Gotta find my old post.
Found it. I have a photoshop view of what it would be like without them.

Holy crap! I thought they were just headrests, and not a roll bar type thing. I guess we'll have to live with our restricted views. Thanks for the picture, if I didn't see it, I wouldn't have believed you.
On a side note, I now know where the sub-woffer is hiding. That's one item I think needs upgrading in the system. Looks like an 8", can you confirm that? How difficult is sub-woofer access?

Whatever it is, it's lame! Heard the RGZTOY system this weekend and now I'm hooked. Plus our back speakers are nothing. I only hear the fronts. Astro, I assume you're tearing in there for putting in a system? I'll be watching that closely. Please share in the Gen 2 Audio if that's the case. Thanks for the pic! Cold-splash-of-water-wakeup for anyone dreaming about ripping them out. Major work. (But imagine a 6'3" guy in that pic and you'll see that the "Roll bar" feature would only benefit the rear passenger. I'm toast if I roll. Junest might be okay if she slouches 8) )

Those pics were from when Milton installed the TRD springs. You have to open the back up to access the rear spring/struts. She doesn't have any plans on upgrading her stereo, that I know of.
The roll bar will help whether you 7' or 4', without it the whole top would crush down.

I figure windshield will crush easy and the top is gone up or down. So I draw a line from the front hood vents to the headrests... anything above that will be smushed. Whatever the case, no way I'm messing w/ that structure.
I checked out the CD pics. Nice to know what a lowered ragtop w/o body kit looks like. Sweet work by Milt.
