Anywhere I can get a spare key and remote cheaper?

Anywhere I can get a spare key and remote cheaper?

Postby enzoshadow » Fri Jul 08, 2005 10:20 am

I lost my key(I know! I am so dumb.), so I went to the Toyota dealer to ask for the price to make the spare key and remote. The price is about 190$+80labor= around 270$. That's a lot of money for me. Does anyone know if it's possible to make a spare key and remote for cheaper price rather then go to the Toyota dealer?

if you key has the immobalizer chip in it, then you need to get a chip-key, if not..then any key (even from walmart) will work!

As far as the remote, check ebay...(match the fcc numbers behind your other remote to the ones' on ebay). As far a programming instructions, if you google search i'm sure you will find them. This would be your cheapest route! I myself am in process of going the same for my 97 camry, i can't seem to find any remotes for my fcc id #'s. so if i were you, i'd buy more than a remote if you find one...

IF you can't find things cheaper, it might be a good time to consider an alarm system that has it's own remote and bypasses the stock stuff. Two birds...

Which Transponder Key?

Postby whdean » Fri Jul 08, 2005 5:11 pm

There is more than one transponder key for the Gen2. The SE uses a generic transponder key that can be programmed with the master key and a sequence of activities - The owner can do it. The SLE uses a different kind of transponder setup, so that even it you have the cut transponder key blank, it will not respond to the sequence of activities - It must be programmed with a unit that attaches to the ECU. Toyota dealers have them and some locksmiths have them.

I know because I've been there. I found a locksmith that brought his mobile unit to me and programmed 2 more keys from my remaining master key. He charged me $35 per key and a $30 trip charge, or $100 for two keys. He even used real Toyota key blanks with the logo on them.

For the remote, go to e-bay and get one that has the same FCC code as your remote. If it's the remote that ends in VT20T, (the one with 4 buttons on the front) I've got the instructions. Just let me know via e-mail and I'll send them to you.

Good luck.

Found couple that seems to be exactly the same with my current remote.

It's interesting that the dealer tried to charge me about 130$ + 80 labor for just the remote, while I can find it for 30$ on ebay. ^_^
All I have to do now is to find a locksmith, can anyone tell me where to look for locksmith? HomeDepot???? I live in Torrance, CA, it will be great if anybody can recomment me a good locksmith around here.

Thank you!

I bought my spare key for my Gen 1 off ebay, it came with instructions on how to program it yourself, foregoing tghat huge dealer fee. Only catch is you need one working key to do it. I was happy though, it was 20 bucks and it took me about 2 minutes to do and now I don't have to live in immense fear of losing my keys and being screwed.

Locksmiths

Postby whdean » Sat Jul 09, 2005 7:36 am

Don't go to Home Depot looking for locksmith advice.

Go to http://www.internet-locksmith.com. It's a board of professional locksmiths. You can search for locksmiths in your area and ask questions in their public forum. Most of the forums are restricted due to the proprietary nature of the information, but these guys are very helpful. The locksmith that did my work told me that if I wanted to do something nice for him, I could go to that site and report a positive experience for others to see.

I'm confident that the folks at that web site will help you will find a locksmith with a mobile van, Toyota keys, and a computer to hook into your ECU. The entire process of making me 2 keys took about 20m minutes.

Good luck.

Good luck.
